It's approaching that time of year again where I have to tackle the tedious task of sweeping up the garden leaves. I have tried using the hand held type vacuum units in the past but they are really not best suited to the volume of leaves I have to shift. I was considering one of the Billy Goat machines : http://www.justlawnmowers.co.uk/pages/blowers/bill... but at circa £500 they are not cheap. Anyone on here got any views on which machines offer the best value in terms of reliability and ease of use, and will they save me the time and effort I am hoping for?

The bag on the five hundred pound model looks as if it will fill in a couple of minutes.
I would look for a S/H one with a larger bag.

I just raise the cut on the mower and use that, chops and compacts the leaves fine. Have to empty it more often than a specialised machine I guess and it only works with a rotary one, but see no reason to do otherwise as long as the leaves are on the grass.

Cheers for the replys, a lot of the leaves fall on to gravel and paved areas. I have a large Hayter petrol mower and have used that to clear light falls of leaves on grass but once every thing drops then it really can't cope with the volume.

I agree about the size of collection bag, I guess I am looking for something that will have some kind of impeller to shred the leaves as they are collected but then I think we are looking at nearer a grand..

The little manual Billy Goats are a waste of time - pushing that thing uphill or over gravel / uneven ground is not fun. Don't know about the small ones like that, but the bigger Estate ones have impellers so the leaves are utterly destroyed before getting to the bag, so whilst the bag may not look all that huge, on the Estate ones at least they're tough to lift when full as there's so damned much crammed in there. That sort of unit will be £900+ though... then again they're pretty much indestructible, so it should last a goodly long time.
