Just come back from a lovely round trip to Oban (despite the driving rain). Lovely run - almost no traffic on the road either there or back, and was pretty lucky with the road when I did come across something as overtaking opportunities were always around.
I was also really pleasantly surprised at the number of cars (at least 4) who pulled over on some of the twisties to let me past... and I was being good and sitting a long way back waiting for the road to open up, so no tailgating. Thanks to all of those nice people!
My route back was:

and I have to say, it has some of the best driving roads around. A couple of the sections are quite bumpy, but nothing to worry about unless you have a real hardcore track setup, IMO. There was, however, a fair bit of standing water which led to some amusing incidents where I really tested out the 4wd. Stunning scenery, despite the dreich conditions - autumn colours really in evidence and driving along the edge of a loch or waterway is always great.
The best bit, IMO, was the run from Arrochar to Garelochhead as it's very twisty, empty and all over the shop. Can do the whole thing entirely within the speed limit and still have the most massive grin on your face - awesome! I had forgotten how good that road is. Not all that bumpy, either.
Any other recommended runs that come to mind? Surprised there isn't a sticky...

Know the road well. However I would rate the route south from Oban to Lochgilphead then over to Inveraray even higher. There is a section between Croab Haven and the turn off to Ford that I usually turn round and do twice.
Funnily enough, that was the road we took on the way up! I think it's the Argyll Coastal Road and I can't disagree - a lovely run. In fact, that's probably the best thing about the run up to Oban - you can do one road one way and then the other on the way back...Not been driving all that long and tbh I dont know if I would know a properly good driving road if it bit me on the arse. But does anyone know fereneze road in barrhead takes you up the braes or uplawmoore? Its about 5 mins away from my house and puts a smile on my face. Never really any traffic about either which is quite good.
Used to live in Balloch, long time ago! spent most weekends in Inverary with my parents at the Inverary caravan site, we went over to Oban a lot using the route you put up on Google, even spent a lot of saturday evenings in Lochgilphead as that was the closest cinema to Inverary
Took my Belgian partner over the route from Tyndrum down to Oban and then on through Lochgilphead and Inverary and back to Alexandria ("The Vale"). She fell in love with Oban and the surrounding area and wants to explore it more and will be doing so soon.
In the '60s it normally took 1hour 10 minutes to get from Balloch to Inverary and the road has improved a lot since then, infact when my father first took us across it was single track, I've seen landslides and road closures of all sorts going over there and even stopped to watch Alistair Kerr driving his XK120 Jag up the old road at the Rest and be Thankfull in a hill climb.
You guys sure make me home sick!
Look out for a 400bhp MG ZT running up the lochside soon
