PayPal - account review blackmail

Anyone else had their PayPal account reviewed recently?
First I knew of it was when I logged in to withdraw some funds, after selling a phone on ebay.
I was greeted by the message 'your account is under review, please complete the following steps'.
I could not withdraw any money untill I had supplied them with my bank details, so they could take all future payments via direct debits from my bank account, instead of via my debit card.
I would have had no problems with that if they had asked me, but to demand it and hold your funds as ransom is totally wrong. So be warned!

I had my bank registered with paypal (as you do) and they would always attempt to take payment from this before credit card unless I specified otherwise but then a year or so ago they told me that my bank account was no longer verified? and that I should re-enter all the details, I've not done so and so now they only take from CC now which I prefer. The only downside is that I can't withdraw funds from my paypal account anymore, so I have to spend them instead.

I hadn't sold anything on ebay for months, probably over a year, yet I recently put 20-30 items of old Office type IT equipment (networking, storage, server components) on there, did a spreadsheet to work out ebay and paypal fees.£660 of sales, £110 to ebay and paypal....

OP: Was this issue not the usual that once you've had a certain amount of sales they require you to verify for money laundering regulations? Think it's something like the first £600 is ok, after that you need to verify. Not a paypal issue if it is....it's law.
They are a bunch of crooks, cannily registered in Switzerland where they can trample all over all sorts of good regulations that exist for good reason elsewhere.
Don't use them. Its a house of cards that will eventually topple over.

I couldn't work out precisely why I would want to do that, but now I know.
I don't sell anything, just buy, but it is obvious they are making moves on demanding I give them the details/permissions required.

I had exactly this last year. I completed 2 out of the 3 tasks but the system could not phone me back for some reason as it would not accept my home number. It went on for about 3 months and I was getting seriously narked over it. Eventually after speaking with a helpful chap in Ireland, he managed to remove the block from the account. It was one of the most inconvenient things to do to my account and I told them my views. Also because my ebay account has its own dedicated bank account (to prevent fraud from my main account), when they tried to take money without asking for it first as part of this stupied check, they caused a payment to fail resulting in two charges of £35 for my bank First I knew of it was when I logged in to withdraw some funds, after selling a phone on ebay.

I wrote to Paypal showing how they were resonsible for this and they refunded both charges once I had sent them a fax to confirm. I then complained to my bank that taking 2 charges out for a transaction that I was not responsible for, was an unfair charge, and they refunded one of them, so all in all I was up
