Has anyone had any problems with their DCT gearbox?
I had a demo yesterday in a dealers DCT equipped M3.
While out in the car, I got the "Transmission Failure" message appear followed by "Limited gear selection available". I hadn't been going mental, but was changing up again from 2nd gear after exiting a corner. Wasn't accelerating particularly hard either.
Up until that point, I had been mightily impressed by DCT over my SMG gearbox. But my SMG hasn't ever shown me the red cog of death yet.
The dealer did go and try the car 10 minutes after I returned, and all seemed fine, but once I had the error message I could only select 2nd, 4th and 6th gears.
Is it known to be fragile or fickle?

I would say not. There have been a number of software updates over the 18 months since the DCT box was introduced to improve various characteristics, but I have not read of this sort of failure on the forums. I have about 20,000 miles on my DCT, and I think it is fantastic - a different world from the SMG, much faster and smoother (if you choose) in manual mode, and also a very satisfactory automatic if that is what you want. One thing which may surprise you - acceleration times are as quick in smooth shifting S1 as in harsh shifting S5/6.
