Etched onto the side of the engine block of a later 4.5 engine.

I was removing liners and generally cleaning pending taking my spare engine block to APM.

I noticed this pen etched rather than stamped onto the block, hidden by years of engine debris. Anyone have any ideas what it actually means. This is a 4.5 block off a later car, and therefore not likely to be one of the early 4.2 GT blocks we sometimes hear about.

It was not the 4.2 cars that were stamped up as GT's it was some of the early 4.5's like mine.

I'm not sure, I don't know enough about the engines to know if anything looked different. There is rumours that the internals are different but I guess I have no way of telling unless it is pulled apart.

Mine's an early(ish) 4.5 with the GT stamp. From the merkyness of my mind, wasnt it that the GT stamped engines had machined cranks (as opposed to cast? whichever is the stronger). Or the other way round, never could remember paperbag

IIRC the 4.5 was originally to be called the Cerbera GT or something similar. If you have one then you may be lucky and have a billet crank (very early cars). I suspect that the first batch of engines were made with billet cranks simply because they were left over from the batch made for initial prototype AJP8s.

Mine looks like a bog standad set of internals, unless anyones got photos of the visual differences between a standard and billet crank
