So after years of being told to switch off our mobile devices, the ability to text and browse the web is now being used as a selling point for BA's new service between London City and NY JFK.

We've got enhandced mobile 'phone and wireless internet on intercity train services now, so I suppose it was only a matter of time... I suppose that on planes, as long as someone's occupied by their laptop/Crackberry, they're not causing trouble and, unlike making 'phone calls, they shouldn't be disturbing other passengers.

There's a live report today about BA's new Airbus 318 service to JFK on the PlaneTalking website. Obviously, you can follow their trip on Twitter here: http://twitter.com/Plane_Talking

One of my clients is behind this service. It's been operational with Air France for over a year now and I believe Ryanair have got it in 50+ airframes. It seems to work very well. Essentially you 'roam' while on board with the data relayed by Inmarsat SwiftBroadband. It's all jolly nice.

I was wondering how the logistics of shifting the data actually worked.

And on Saturday, stood on the platform of a very busy tube station laughing at my wife, who in turn was laughing back at me from the other side of the just closed doors on the packed carriage, I wondered whether TFL might not also do like wise! (Don't worry, we did, eventually meet back up. She is not still lost on the Northern line.)
