Writing a children's book

Anyone written one? I've got a (very loose)idea for a book that might, hopefully, appeal to 4-6 year olds, but just wondered if anyone one had any salient advice. I currently work as a copywriter/creative in advertising, but this is obviously a whole different ball game.

I lectured on a Graphics course very briefly and the stuff that tended to get picked up for publication was mainly down to the quality of the illustration / paper engineering rather than the story. Make sure you get a good illustrator - and by that I don't mean someone who can draw well, I mean someone with a fresh new style that will stand out in a sea of bland.
