How do you drive?
Discussion
This was going to be a poll but i suspect the options may be too varied!
I use a wheel (because i find the thumb-pad far too hard to input small direction or throttle changes) and i use the chase view because it lets me see the car in relation to the road.
....but, am i missing a trick? What do the fast guys use because i may bite the practice hurdle and start using something else if it means faster times even if it takes a while to get used to. A lot of the videos show bonnet view but how do you get any feel for the car without seeing it...i.e, if the back starts sliding - or do you just get used to it?
oh...and if anyone uses a seat, what make? I am getting one and like the Play Seat...anyone got one?

I have the wheel... I Like using the wheel... I'm faster with the wheel... but the Force Feedback from the MS wheel (gears?! wtf...
) is annoying and it takes so long to set up for me as I dont have a fancy seat/stand setup.
Oh and I race with the Clutch which is difficult to do with the MS wheel...

XBox wireless steering wheel with FF (For £65 from Game, it's well worth it! The FF is useful to judge grip/understeer/oversteer), cockpit cam, all HUD switched off and all assists with exception to ABS and clutch (Because a button for a clutch is irritating!) off
Agree with FF...lets you know when the front tires let go - also agree on clutch, having it on a button feels odd so i go half manual!
I use front bumper view.
Reason:
- In cabin view I find too much of the road is blocked by the dash and A pillar, and bonnet view is just weird to me.
- In chase view I find it difficult to judge gaps and drift angles, particularly as most games start to move the chase cam sideways (i.e. to be behind the car) once you start getting a slide on. Makes it hard to consistently judge what the car is doing.
- In bumper view I find it easy to judge slip angle, as you just look at the angle which the objects in the world are coming towards you. (i.e. symetric means you're not sliding, but a right bias means the tails' out to the right etc.) It's also generally consistent from game to game.
Couple of downsides though:
- When following very close it can be hard to see the track if you're literally touching the bumper of the car in front.
- When there's traffic around it can be hard to know exactly where they are in relation to you. Not a problem for normal overtaking, but jostling in a pack can be hard as you can't see to the sides of your car.
In a nutshell, yes you can judge drifts easily from in car view. More easily IMO. Note that there are some exceptions to this rule, though, and these tend to the be the really arcade style games like Burnout, NFS and Sega Rally etc where the drifts are intentionally OTT and you need a chasecam to make sense of the physics model being employed.

i use the wheel, and the bonnet cam view, possibly looking at some sort of seat set up for x-mas any suggestions?
Playseat and Gameracer seem to be the two main ones....both under £300 easily. I am gong for Playseat as the Gameracer looks too "bucket" like for me (i'm big) and i dont want to get squashed!I have the MS wheel, but it sits in the loft gathering dust - Its ugly, cumbersome and I simply can't be arsed with the clutter and headache of setting it up and taking up most of my deskspace. Plus its crap when not driving ie navigating around menus and using the paint editor
I get on fine with the pad, the cockpit view maintains the immersion without using the wheel for me .

Bumper view as the cockpit view is to small to be realistic and you dont get a proper view of whats coming up.
TCL off
ABS off
AB off
STM off
Simulation damage
Automatic as I never saw the point of driving it in manual, not in anyway shape or form realistic, got to admit though I wouldnt mind trying it with a proper wheel set up with 3 pedals and flappy paddles, preferably gearstick though......Hmmmm wonder if FM3 can be worked into Sega Rally machine
