When a woman bursts into tears in the office, do you

a) ignore it and act as though nothing out of the ordinary is happening
b) ask if everything is ok and is there anything you can do
c) report her to HR for disrupting the office

Just happened to me and I opted for initially option a followed by option b when she'd returned from the toilet. Just wondering what the protocol is....

(b) A simple and direct question: "Are you OK? Do you need help? If it's a private matter you don't have to tell me anything."

Chances are she'll wipe her eyes and say: "Yes I'm OK. Thanks for that." ...and there's an end to it...as it will be private women's matters and you will have shown what a considerate co-worker you are without actually risking having her life-story poured out. On the other hand there is a tiny, weensy risk that the aforementioned will happen and she'll pour her heart out to you and you'll be trapped into listening until your very soul withers away.

So perhaps (a). Depends if she's Mental or not.

Well she was 'rescued' from the toilet by a female co worker and they've 'had a chat' and all is well...she even apologised to me as she sat back down.

Life goes back to normal.
