Complete loss of power

Driving back from Wales this morning along the M4 I noticed what felt like a couple of misfires at cruising speed. Then as I got nearer home the problem got worse. I experienced a complete loss of power and or juddering. If I took my foot off the gas power came back, but it seemed anything over 1200rpm it wasn't happy.

Drove it a bit at lunchtime and it's pretty bad. I can hardly make progress.

Anyone know what could be causing this?

Guys, would this have something to do with the air mass flow meter? Cracked plastic pipe causing the ECU to freak out?

I had a similar (but not as drastic) problem with my S3 - it turned out the sensors in the airflow meters were covered in muck & therefore giving incorrect readings to the ECU.

Could be worth a check.

Sounds like it may be an air leak on the inlet possibly, the symptons sound about right, good luck.

Sounds similar to a problem I had earlier this year. Disconnecting the throttle pot made it driveable. Changing the TP didn't get rid of it. I evantually traced it to duff connections for the TP within the multiway connector near the RH rocker cover. I by-passed this with soldered connections, but contact cleaner may be a quicker solution.

Also check:

The small vacuum pipe between the fuel pressure regulator and the throttle

And the vacuum pipe between the plenum and yor brake servo

After all the issues ive had lately, i would always go for the throttle pot first.
buy one from ebay for £10. Used Rover K'series throttle pot

typical. took it to my mechanic who had a look at various connections and checked the airflow meters etc etc. Drove it down the road... no problem. So I popped over and we went for a drive together... again, no problem. Drove it home.... no problem. So it remains to be seen whether his just fiddling with various wires has (temporarily?) fixed a loose connection or sticking vein somewhere.

We may never know....

I found swapping the connections on the Mass Air Flow meters worked a treat and I've had no problems since. Always worth a try
