Like both of these, but probably prefer the dial on the 656. Shame it's £200 more!!

Just been having an online chat with a certain London supplier. They are as stumped as me as to the price difference, as both have the same movement, strap, case...just different dials. "We are not at liberty to discuss Sinn's pricing structure with you sir" was their reply.

Can anyone else shed light on this disparity? Currently torn between one of these two, a Mondaine auto or a Longines Hydroconquest...

Personally I prefer, and have, a 556. Think the dial is much cleaner.

I certainly prefer the date - font and location, and the "Automatik" label as well. Just I think I prefer the numbers on the 656.
Did you find such a difference in price on these when you were looking?

The 656 is antimagnetic (up to 80,000 A/m), the other difference is the 556 is a display back while the 656 is solid. (plus - 556 satinized, 656 bead-blasted - thanx Stuart!)

If they told you that the watches are the same bar the dial, then they don't know their product very well, and I'd suggest talking to Neil at Chronomaster who, from what I hear, definitely does.

The 556 has a satin finished case, but that's about it. The 656 has by comparison a sand blasted (and therefore much more durable) case, and a much higher resistance to magnetic forces (it may even be milgauss rated, but someone will correct me I'm sure). Add that to the different face and whilst I'm not suggesting that it justifies the extra £200 retail price, it definitely explains it.

The next step up is the 856 which adds dehumidifying technology and second time zone (UTC) to the specification of the 656.

A lovely watch either way though.

I love my 856 for the same reasons ^. It is a beautifully finished yet understated piece which whispers quality and craftmanship.

Riwiho - how are you getting on with the PVD? Does it come off?

Just discovered the 656 has a sapphire crystal as well, 556 is coated mineral glass.

This London dealer appears to be less knowledgable than 20 mins with PH and Google at one's fingertips! They took ages to get back to me as well. Anyone know a good dealer for Sinn in the UK? Preferably something in the South of England?

oh, and Riwiho, you were asking whether Sinn will roll out the Diapal across the range, well they've just recently stuck it in the 103, 103Ti and 144 fyi.

HBM - according to Sinn (http://www.sinn.de/Modell/556.htm) the 556 is sapphire with AR on both sides.

He isn't in the South of England, but I only ever hear good things about Neil from Chronomaster. www.chronomaster.co.uk

Cheers. My German obviously isn't up to scratch then!

Look at the top right - there's an 'english / deutsch' option. 'Hande hoche Englander' is my only German.

I think that Chronomaster is one of the best Sinn sites out there. The full range, well shot and well described. Lots of other goodies to distract you as well.

www.jurawatches.co.uk - probably the 'dealer' you've been speaking to.

www.chronomaster.co.uk - as mentioned above, your best bet is to talk to Neil at Chronomaster.

Jura only recently became an AD for Sinn so that's probably why they no 'nothing'. Neil was, until then, the only AD for Sinn in the UK. Having spoken to him (but not purchased as I got an IWC instead), he would have sent a watch out to try based on placing a deposit / CC with him.

Cheers, didn't want to name names, but yeah. So Jura are the only place I can realistically try one on before purchasing then?

Chronomaster are £25 cheaper, so will give them a call I think.

Anyone know of a Mondaine dealer other than Austin Kaye btw?

Although he could do with giving his website a bit of a tidy up.

Yeah, it's not the best piece of design out there. Bit too much scrolling around for my liking! Still, looks a good price, and with all these recommendations I'd be silly not to. Just I have a hankering for a Mondaine as well...I know the Sinn will be built better, but there's something quirky I just love about the Mondaine.

Neil @ Chronomaster will offer sale or return too. He offered me a U1 on this basis, buy it, try it at home, then keep it or return it.

Cheers guys, 556 it is. Just need to sell a couple of the Omegas first, as I bought me and the missus matching Mondaines. boxedin
Either them or my 306 D Turbo!
