Any thoughts on buying a Jetta 1.9 TDI. No idea what they are like.

Very nice cars, well built with a decent interior, and the boot is bigger than a Passat. The residuals are a bit rubbish so they make for a cheap used buy. The one to have is the 1.9 TDI SE DSG. Decent handling and ride quality on the 16" rims, ride quality takes a hit if you get 17" wheels and sports suspension. Engine is very noisy and quite slow of the mark with a fairly narrow power band. Not much good arround town, but on the motorway it quietens down and performs well. MPG is good on longer runs, but not so good if you use it to drive to the shops and back without letting it warm up. VW dealers can be a bit hit and miss, some of them are very very poor, others are OK.

I have a 57 plate 1.9 TDI SE DSG which I picked up used last year and it was less then a year old. So far (1 year and about 12k miles) it's been a good car, and in my opinion a lot of car for the money if you buy 2nd hand. Essentially a Golf but with a boot tacked onto the back.

I'd have to disagree with the comment of the DSG being not so good in town, I do 90% driving in and around London and find the DSG box fine. It does have it's moments such as being hesitant when you first accerate but you quickly get used to it and learn to adjust.

Definitely agree about VW dealers, some of them are very poor indeed especially the one not far from a rather large rugby stadium in S.W.-ish London.

I didn't mean that, I was referring to the 1.9 TDI not been good in town, as its noisy and dosent have much power off-boost. Its the same regardless of which gearbox is fitted.

Aaahh ok sorry misunderstood. Yes I'd agree it's no powerhouse, is noisy and a bit slow off the mark but not unbearably so. On the plus side from what I've read from this forum the 1.9 tdi is generally bulletproof so not a lot goes wrong.

Had the Jetta for one week now, seems a very good car and am very pleased. Average so far 49 mpg, 54 on a run, should have done this sooner. Any thoughts about getting it chipped, car is just under 2 years old.

Chipping it will bring it up to about 135-145bhp. Probably best to get a system like Bluefin so you can take the map on and off easily.

mjwscorpio - good choice!

valo - I read somewhere that there is some kind of counter in the ecu that will record each time it's re-mapped. Is this true? A dealer could then use this against you come warranty claim time?

First I've heard of it. I'd always thought the chipping systems actually flash the ECU with new software.

Did a google search and found a bit more info here:

Apparently the tuner that remaps can reset the counter.
