Yesterday I was stuck at an underground car park unable to switch the engine on; a technician, requested by myself, tries to jump start my car, yet I'm unable to turn the key as before. He jumps in and switches it on easily telling me that the steering was locked (before that I assumed the battery went flat once again). I'm now confused about the steering lock - how do I engage/disengage it and why has it prevented me from turning the key? I'm on my first car (Alfa 156) and still learning new things.

The steering lock on a car also stops the ignition barrel turning.

If when you put the key in it will not turn, just waggle the steering wheel left and right until the key turns.
