The article actually says:

"A force spokesman explained: 'Terms such as afternoon and evening are somewhat subjective in meaning and can vary according to a person's culture or nationality. In many cultures the term evening is linked to time of day when people have their main meal of the day."

So the police handbook doesn't say it is offensive.

But don't let that get in the way of more Daily Wail/Pistonheads middle-England hand wringing.

What on earth rofl

Wail article said:
It also states: 'Don't use phrases that include black in a negative context, such as black mark , black day.'
This is what stops the police doing their job properly - useless crap like that.

+1 What's the harm is equipping our police with knowledge about cultures that may be different from their own?

Absolutely. The Mail should be forced to publish a correctional common-sense supplement written by a grown-up with every issue.

And the readers should be forced to wear a badge so that we all know who they are and can treat their opinions accordingly.

Erm, I did say I read it elsewhere first. Anyhow the point is no less valid.

What is wrong with saying "Good Evening" in any bloody culture!

Nothing, the article/handbook just says that it might be confusing. Just as some people have dinner at noon and some in the late afternoon.

Does it actually say using "good evening" as a greeting is wrong?

From the very small quote, it reads more like a corporate communications guideline for producing posters, leaflets, writing up statements etc. In that context it'd appear perfectly sensible advice to avoid subjective terms when clarity is required (i.e. giving a specific time rather than saying "teatime"). Doesn't have to have anything to do with ethnic minorities either - just look at the regional variation between the north and south for example.

The police shouldn't need to waste time learning/worrying about this bullsh!t. The different cultures can learn the standard in Britain, which is that evening is between afternoon and night.

There, much easier...

I do love the ironies surrounding the Daily Mail - in the same way that unemployed yoofs wearing Burberry caps don't think of themselves as chav, Mail readers don't think they are reactionary retards.

Long may it prosper.

The first rule of being a Mail reader is: You don't think there's anything wrong with being a Mail reader.

The second rule is: You are in constant mortal danger and should live in fear of everything.

Third rule: Illegal immigrant darkies are bringing down house prices and taking our jobs while dancing on Diana's grave.

Is it a 'flood' or a 'wave'? Or even an 'invasion' of some sort? Are there 'hordes' of things?

Oh I do hope so - I'll be able to get all het-up about it and the day's task of dusting the doulton figures will just fly by.
