Hi All,

As per the title, am I able to tow a Mk1 MX5 with a Classic Impreza wagon (ideally on a trailer)?

I understand that as i've had my license just under 10 years that I'll need to take an additional test but just wanted to check on the weight restrictions etc.

Thanks,
Phill

It's never simple is it!

We've been left the Impreza by a family member who recently lost her battle with cancer and I want to retire the MX5 from daily duties (191k on it now) and just use it for track day fun etc.

Surely you can retire the MX5 from daily duties and still drive it to track days? If you keep it road legal you can always use it in the weekends as well.

That's probably what will happen tbh. Our son was born a fortnight ago so it would involve taking two cars if we all wanted to go together.

Putting it on the trailer would save me having to tax it. As it is i'm going to put it in the garage over winter and sort out the suspension etc so trailering/driving it anywhere isn't going to be an issue for a few months.

Phil,

My GF did a towing test a few months ago around Leighton Buzzard. Will ask her for some info when I see her.

Best,

Why not rather than towing the car on a trailer tow it with an A-Frame. Just take a couple of spare tyres for the car in case of a blow out at the track so you can always tow it home. Even if you break something on it most of the time it will still be towable via an A-Frame. You just need an 'on tow' sign at the back of it and probably a numberplate board with lights on.

I'm not really sure of the rules about towing with an A-Frame, but it was just a thought.

Don't think i can bring myself to sell it! I know it needs some work (Suspension, clutch and tyres) but it's just such good fun! If the Impreza wasn't a freebie I wouldn't even be thinking about changing!

It's great, make no mistake it has it's irritations (small amount of rust on the right rear archl, occasionally fills the boot with water [drain holes], 85mph cruise is 4500rpm etc) but nothing can beat the fun of lining up a couple of challenging bends and nailing it with the exhaust popping on the over run.

I reckon with a supercharger installed I'd never want to get out of it let alone sell it!

Running costs have been minimal (see my profile for details) but I am surprised by the amount of fuel it drinks.

I'm actually looking forward to having a little project to work on over winter! Highly recommended.

hehe I had some work lined up for last winter on my elise. My little boy is now 11 months old and the Elise hasn't been touched yet. With a 2 week old in tow, good luck getting anything done.... biggrin
