I've been looking at getting an X5 diesel (old shape) but I spoke to someone at a dealers yesterday (wasn't trying to dell me one) who ran one and reckoned he never got good mpg from his - 22/23mpg he reckoned.

So, is this true, and if so, how bad are the bigger-engines petrol X5's in comparison?

Diesels are supposed to do 30-32, while the petrols (4.4, 4.6, 4.8) do 19-21. I drove a 4.8 recently and didn't even realise we were towing a trailer and race car on the back! Rapid tank!

I have one - 56 plate bought at 6.5k miles now at 37k.

Trip computer has two consumption calculators - one I re set leaving the dealership on the day I collected the car.

This currently reads 30.1 mpg. My 30K miles have been a real mix of motorway and urban driving although I am not particularly heavy with the right foot.

On a motorway cruise it will do an indicated 35-36mpg

Had an X5 3.0 sport in auto guise. Good engine that used to give me 20mpg around town and averaged 28.5mpg on a tour round Spain and France last year.

Great engine around town and on A roads but needed more gutts on the motorway.

We had a X5 3.0D Sport, it was the last model not the current car.

It would only average 26 mpg.

I've got a 2001 diesel, the OBC says 25mpg. My driving is mainly 50% town driving and 50% national speed limit roads, and I have a fairly heavy foot.

Given the choice again I'd probably get a V8.

I had an '05 3.0d (chipped) and it returned 26mpg and a '55 4.8iS which over a year and 35,000 miles returned 18mpg (that cost me over £10,000 alone in fuel that year yikes )

I did however drive both like I stole them all the time!

No problem.

If I were buying another, I'd go diesel all the time.

A nicely spec'd chipped 3.0d M Sport with the right kit is every bit as good as the 4.8iS just without the noise!

2004 X5 3.0d Sport, 68k miles - owned from new, never re-set computers:

28.3 mpg

I'm sure 30mpg is an achievable average, under the right conditions.

And, it's very smooth and plenty quick enough.

2005 X5 3.0D
Short local runs 22-23 mpg.
A 200 mile + motorway round trip 32-35 mpg.

I don't hang around when I'm out in mine on the local runs.

Not sure if it'll help but for comparison:

Wife's old car : X5 3.0 petrol - 18 mpg average
Wife's new car : X5 3.0 twin turbo DERV - 22mpg average
