Me and a few mates are looking at going skiing after christmas, probably early Jan

We have all been skiing before..

Basically where is the best resort/area to go

Dont really want to spend any more than £500 with flights, accomodation, lift pass, ski and boot hire, and transfers. Does anybody know of any deals, we want a big resort with lots of lifts/routes etc.

Any suggestions

I was looking at Chamonix

Flights £100 each
Lift pass £180 each
Hotel £75 each
Ski and boot hire £80 each
Transfers £50 each

For that budget, try Bankso smile

or a road trip. I've done a few cheapy snowboarding road trips with my mates which have been more fun than far more expensive ones.

Look for a hostel, I stayed at a hostel once at Serre Chevalier.

Can't remember how much it was but I'm sure it wasn't £75/night.

I just had to put up with drunken French blokes up until 2am drinking but I'm sure a bunch of 4 lads can hold their own OK smile

NO, the absolute WORST resort i have ever been to, crap nightlife and horrible people, its cheap for a reason and even then its overpriced for how shockingly bad it is......on that budget i'd be looking at flying to geneva and getting an apartment in flaine, Avoriaz...somewhere close to Geneva, or, going to Italy or Andorra, Pas de la Casa is ideal for lads trips and is cheap with great bars and ok slopes

Drive don't fly. Look for self catered apartments in less fashionable French resorts. Why do you want a big resort? To get the most from such a small budget I would look at smaller places.

Try http://www.pv-holidays.com/ski_accommodation_franc... they are doing some good deals at the moment.

Have regularly been to Chatel, which is high enough for decent snow and allows you access to Portes du Soleil, the largest linked skiing area in Europe.
I've just priced 5 days (3 1/2 skiing) straddling feb/mar '10.
Can get return flights for £60 to Geneva
Car Hire for 5 days @ £150
Nice B&B I always stay at is usually £50 single , double £75 per night.
Full pass to all areas and ski hire usually costs £40 per day per person.
I usually have a large fill at breakfast and buy some bread, meats & cheese to eat on the slopes at lunch.
For evening meals, shop around for a restaurant where the locals go. Figure on twenty quid for evening meal plus beer/wine.
You get what you pay for, and even knowing when and where to go I work on five days for one is just over £700, £600 for two. Four would get it down nearer to £550 each, depending on the bar tab!!
Losing the car hire won't save you much between four, and believe me, not having to get crammed onto ski buses and the freedom a car gives you is a must!

Prices haven't changed much, it's just the near parity euro/sterling that's made it so much dearer over the past few years.

ETA Avoriaz is more central with s/c chalets, that might bring the accommodation costs down for four of you.
Never been, but I hear Bulgaria is cheaper with good snow.

Went here a few years back and had a brilliant time, ski all day party all night. It all cost well under £500.

Look into sleeper train from Paris too. If you catch it at an odd time (ie not Sat/Sun changeover) you might get a good deal.

Or that, but I meant the domestic SNCF trains. Eurostar to Paris then change via Metro.
