I just replied to a thread on the "964 Windscreen " post but thought maybe to start a 993 same question thread. I have just put a new screen In my 993S at an approved Porsche body shop. I told the Insurance that I wanted an "Original " screen not a cheap copy so as to avoid the squeek/rattle Issues. I did'nt expect to see the stamp on the screen "made by Pilkingtons In Germany" now all the other glass and the original sreen were by "SEKURIT". I havent driven any distance yet so I dont know If It's going to rattle etc, although It has been bonded In and teflon tape was used all round the screen. The question Is are Pilkingtons Germany the sole screen maker's now and not SEKURIT. At plus 700.00 notes plus fitting I hope It's the real deal!!! Cheers for any thought's.

Sorry, maybe I was'nt very clear. I have no Issues with the Insurance they were great, the total bill was over 900.00 (original screen)and It only costs me 60.00 for the excess.I explained to them (the Insurers) I wanted an OE fitment, as cheaper screens/Installers did'nt cut the mustard. The point I was trying to make was the screen was made by Pilkingtons and not Sekurit the original glass makers. That I did'nt expect. I understood that If you go down the cheep fix route, ie Autoglass they will put In a screen for about 450.00 all In but It Is'nt to OE spec. Now I'me no expert but are'nt Pilkingtons In St Helens and would that not be the cheapo version maker also?. The only difference Is that the screen now sitting In my car says "Pilkingtons Made In Germany" In the lower nearside corner. I just find that a bit odd.

There are a number of OE glass manufacturers, Sekurit is the OE/Auto branch of Saint Gobain (a French owned company)
Pilkington is the glass brand name of NSG (a Japanese owned company). Yes, Pilkington originated in St. Helens but there are many glass factories and auto fabricators based in Germany owned by Pilkington / NSG.

Saint-Gobain and Pilkington are direct competitors for the majority of the OE / AGR (Automotive Glass Replacement) market. Pilkingtons is not necessarily a "cheaper" brand it just depends on who gets which contract and at what time - suppliers can and do switch.

Both are global glass manufacturers and both have a very good reputation, the automotive glass standards are extremely stringent so personally I wouldn't worry too much but if you are concerned then go back to your insurers and query it.

FWIW Autoglass but a new screen in my old boxster a year ago and made a fab job of it, they recommended I brought the car too them because it had its original screen in and they can sometimes be a bugger to remove, so I did. Very polite, helpful guy doing the job came in a couple of times to re-assure me as it took a while to get the old one out. They finished returned the car to me clean as a whistle no complaints and the fit of the new screen and trim was perfect.

It was Pilkingtons glass, BTW.

Pilkington and SGS (Sekurit Saint Gobain) are very good brands. So good, that they are not only the OEMs for Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz etc., but also the automotive glazing aftermarket.

You have been misinformed re: quality issues.

FYI, 993 screens are not available (not to my knowledge) in a cheaper 'sub standard' version. Have you asked the supplier if the glass is from an OE source? You may be surprised.

The only difference between a windscreen purchased via OE / OPC and aftermarket suppliers?

In most cases, the logo has been 'watermarked' out, but the screens are no different.

Thanks for your comment's. I got a little concerned about the screen being replaced as so many 993 owners said they had trouble with new screen fittings. That Is to say rattles and squeeks etc. Now I am sure I have read (maybe on 911UK) can't remember now, that after market screens are smaller and just don't fit properly, especially when not fitted correctly by glass fitters without the required knowledge on these bonded 993 screens. Not really test driven the car so I hope mine Is ok.

Well I aint making It up. Plenty of people have posted stuff over the years on the fact that the 993 screen rattles/squeeks If It's not OE and not fitted properly. I am only paying the 60 excess the Insurance Is paying the balance.

I can understand there might be issues if the screen isn't fitted properly but I doubt the screen itself contributes to the problem.

if i may interject as i have just been thorugh this recently.

My car needed some work around the front screen to get rid of some minor rust.

As part of the deal they replaced the windscreen

When they came to collect the car from me i asked if they could fit the "special" porsche tape to the new windscreen in an attempt to get rid the creaking/ squeeking that i had with the old screen.

The bodyshop chap drove off and called the next day to say that the special tape wouldnt be needed as he had found the problem.

The problem was that the screen in the car wasnt a genuine screen and was too small for the frame, therefore whoever fitted it just mashed in a load of sealer to fill the gap, hence the squeeking as the frame wasnt holding the screen in place and it could move about. He sent me a photo showing that the gap at the bottom was big enough for him to poke a large flat bladed screw driver through the sealer without touching the glass or the frame of the car.

He relaced the screen with a genuine part after trying 4 different non genuine screen, none of which fitted.

He delivered the car back and there is no squeeking/ creaking at all - none, zip, nada.

So in my experience only genuine screens fit and non porsche screens dont - you can get a non porsche screen to fit, but it wont fit if you see what i mean.

As an aside - the front screen of a 993 (when fitted correctly) also contributes quite substantially to the overall stiffness of the car, therefore if the screen isnt located in the frame properly there is a risk the the overall stiffness / strength of the car will be reduced......

993 screens are not a/the problem. They are all made to spec by the top manufacturers. Pilks, and SGS are both OEMs for these screens whether or not this particular screen has the logo on it.

You cannot get a 'cheap' (meaning sub-standard) screen for this particular car. The only problems are from installer error, or in the extremely rare circumstance, product failure (adhesive system) which again, is usually down to human error.

I'm watching this with interest as my 993 screen definitely squeaks a lot. Are we absolutely sure the screen is bonded in on a 993 though??? It certainly doesn't look like it to my relatively untrained eye. And I have read on rennlist about people buying some kind of Teflon beading for their 993's where they then peel back the screen rubber and squeeze it in between that frame and the seal. Can be bought from Porsche at considerable cost or DIY stores for pennies. Apparently it makes a big difference. Though apparently it eventually compresses and the squeaking comes back. Not sure over what timeframe.

100% certainty. 993 screens are all bonded.

You stating, "doesn't look like it.." is a concern.

The 993 is most definitely a bonded fitment and Glassman's last post is spot on... wink
