Abit of a random one, but after watching James May's Toy Stories, he said that one Spitfire Factory was employing 15,000 people. I thought, at this moment.. Could we, the UK actually afford to go to war with another country?

This doesn't include dropping one nuke on the country as that's cheating.

Well - we can barely afford Iraq and Afghanistan. I assume you're talking about a full on conventional war?

Probably, if we didn't have to pay 35 million quid a day to the EU.

Probably could go to war....wouldn't last long though seeing as Winky has single handedly destroyed industry and manufacturing hence not much in the way of supplies....plus no money to buy weapons from abroad at inflated "war prices".

Yes, I meant on the scale of WWII or so.

Years worth of fighting.. But thinking about it, Afganistan and Iraq are 'wars' that we are partaking in.

Erm, I know it's not the done thing on here but the destruction of manufacturing and industry began waaay before he was near it...I'd lay that accolade at the door of a certain person in charge in teh 80's....which will no doubt get me witch-hunted around here...

Bit O/T, does anyone have a link or somesuch to the amount counties put into the EU, and then get straight back in subsidies etc.

It's as clear as mud to me, is that Thatcher EU rebate still applicable to the UK ?

Anyway the UK seems very much in debt, so no.

They can just about afford that but they're being a bit careful about their expense claims at the momentlaugh

We don't have the resources in terms of technology or quality of manpower to manufacture the kit for a good war.

I'm sure we do, but it's the government's randomly cut costs policy thats stopping us. They're saying the army isn't adequately equipped right now because it's simply too expensive to get the right amount of stuff that they need. This is not acceptable, when we're wasting money allowing Mr Pikey McChav to sit on his arse in a house paid for by the taxpayer drinking Stella paid for by the taxpayer because he can't be arsed to go and get a job. It's disgusting.

Well, look at the technological advancements of WW2; Jet engines, unmanned vehicles and thousands more.
The Cold War put us in space, on the moon and gave us aircraft like the B52 which they are planning to use until 2080! Imagine using a plane 130 years old for long range bombing now? Oh wait....
It's not an issue of "Could we afford it?" a war is a war, you don't really have a choice in the matter...
Not supporting him, but Hitler's Germany was EASILY the first country to come out of the Wall Street recession because he started huge government projects like the Autobahns. It just goes to show what you can do (For good as well as evil) when you can do what you want. If a country gets into a full scale conventional war, this is the kind of thing that happens.
Although we would still face the same problem as in the other world wars, we can't produce enough food so would have to fly/ship it in.
Also everyone has nukes. Go figure.

The Defense industry is one of our biggest, with modern weapons on a traditional battlefield - we'd be ok.

I'd prefer us to be paying £35 million a day and NOT fighting with the EU then paying £35 million a day and fighting our European neighbours.

I wonder how much per day the two wars against Germany cost us - not to mention countless wars against Spain, France, Rusiia, Holland, America etc etc etc?

Not to mention the cost in human lives.

You must realise the Hitler's massive armaments expansionist programme was totally dependent on waging war against Russia. If he didn't fight Russia and win, Germany was gouing to be bankrupt. The gamble, of course, failed.
