Open or closed?

Sorta a random question, I have a tag Monaco with an alligator leather strap and was wondering is it best to leave the clasp done up or leave the clasp open when I'm not wearing it?
Also whilst we are on straps what to people recomend to use to protect it (ie is it like leather sofas that you need to use special leather feeds / creams)
