Why are the post office so useless

Went in earlier to sort out road tax, only to be told that they don't accept credit cards as payment .... THIS IS THE 21ST CENTURY! HOW CAN YOU NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS?

Guess I'll have to do it online and brave the RM wkers striking

Well, to be fair my local post office accepts payments by card.

Well, to be fair my local post office accepts payments by card.

They WONT accept CC payments for Road Tax though, only cash or debit ... yet DVLA website will accept CC just fine (but charge you £2.50 for it privilege)

When I did my tax last month they said that they do accept credit cards, but the DVLA do not, which is why the tax payment had to be done with a debit card. This may or may not be true, but that is what I was told.

Except that DVLA accept CC cards on their website, plus you are paying the PO who then pay DVLA so there is no reason why PO cannot take payment via CC and then send money to DVLA however they wish

that is what I thought, but apparently the actual payment is run by the DVLA. I suspect you might be right that it is simply that they would have to charge more for CC payments so just refuse to avoid the hassle.

The only problem I had with that was that I had just bought a car, pretty much on a whim, which meant that my debit card was already maxed out, so the tax payment sent me into my overdraft. Not a major problem, but quite an annoyance.

My post office has never accepted CC's. Debit cards fine though.

I agree - I was behind a guy in a shop in London recently and he paid for a newspaper and packet of crisps on an Egg credit card!!

I was trying to buy road tax seeing as I wont have the money on my debit card until Friday :/

I once paid a 6FFr charge that I hadn't been told about at a hotel on a credit card.

That was about 60p.

I thought everything had been paid for at the travel agent, but there was this tax that I "needed" to pay - I had no French money at all.

Perhaps you should instead complain to the banking debit/credit card system that seems to take an age at times to work ... it should all be nearly instant now-a-days
