Dear All,

I'm thinking of laying up the 'ro over the winter but Greenlight don't discount for this.

Has anyone laid up their car, got cheaper insurance as a result and with whom?
I'd expect such a policy to still cover e.g. fire & theft, just not use on road,

regards,
Jet

If your insurance now is Fully Comp, can't you just reduce it to 3rd party fire and theft? or, how about contacting your Home Insurance people to see how much it would cost to get it covered under that policy, I would assume it would have to be garaged tho, your home cover would inc theft of bikes/tools etc from a shed, why not a car from a garage ?

But if you went to another insurer to try and get winter cover only then you would no doubt have to end your current policy early. They would give you fk all back (so you'd pay up for the entire year early) and then pay out for a new policy for winter ?

I can't see it saving you any money and you could take it out for a blast now and again on a sunny day to blow the cobwebs off.

I have done this in the past with Tesco, the monthly premuim was about £12 coming down from around £100 pcm for TPF&T. BTW, it did have to be 'gargaged' as opposed to off road parking. I might have lied on that bit as I wanted the insurance reverted with ease from a phone call to use the car.

Dear All,

thanks for the, er, help.

I have (fond) memories of a mangled Alpina C2 2.7 to thank for my RWD/winter conflict.
TPF&T is a possibility, I'll try that.
Good point about no claims, I'll check that. I thought you at least had some grace, it doesn't need to be contiguous.
My policy expires in February and I save £138.79 if I chop today, not peanuts is it?
In future years I may have a longer layup which may make it more cost effective, I'm only picking up a more winter friendly 2nd car on Saturday.
It is in a garage,

regards,
Jet

Just got another policy from Flux and it's really not worth it with them, penalties are too harsh.

Dear MyM8V8,

I just got a quote for a couple of hundred for 12months, and as you say no refunds for shorter terms. No use as I just want it for the winter, 4 months at most,

regards,
Jet

I do it every year with the summer toy and its far cheaper than keeping it fully insured for the road. As somebody already mentioned, it is only for fire and theft (but thats all you need) and its done as an amendment on my policy (tesco) - will be SORN'ing mine at the end of November (save some road tax as well thumbup)

We do have laid up policies available that you can convert to a road policy when you want to drive the car again.

I'm afraid we don't have anything in the Republic of Ireland at the moment.

Sorry.

Dear All,

Greenlight also don't TPF&T for any vehicle >£5k!
So I'm stuffed this winter.

Useful to know Flux's are more flexible, I can't remember whether I asked them to quote when I first insured the 'ro. I'll ask for a quote in the new year when my policy is up for renewal.
As a rule they're modified friendly? 2004 CV8 + focus pac, AP brakes, ripshifter, Pedders shocks and VXR springs
And what security do they usually need (if any) in addition to standard?

regards,
Jet

We are modified friendly and our policies will cover mods on a like for like basis rather than only replacing with standard parts.

The security terms do differ from company to company and we do have markets available with just factory fitted systems.

I may cash the tax in actually aswell, thinking about it chances of using it over winter is slim to none as wont go out in the wet or worse, and im either working or on holiday pointless having it taxed!
