Further to my excessively long post on another topic where I judged the M3 quite harshly in the scale of things I've just got to say here that a couple of weeks of ownership on and in this superb wet weather I've totally fallen in love with this little M3!

I just can't believe how nice it is to drive! 1000 times more than any other BMW I've owned I've just connected with this old car. It’s not the fastest or the most flash but the mix of handling, comfort and that engine (which always puts a smile on my face). I just absolutely love it! What a car. Seriously!! It's just 'just' nabbed my vote from the 3.8 E34 M5 of the same era to become my favourite M car ever (so far). Love the E34 but even with the superb handling you’re still always aware of the size and weight of the thing. The lighter M3 gets away with more compliant suspension at no loss to the handling and dare I suggest even slightly better poise (at the front end at least). The M5 struggles a bit with understeer where the road is rough and speeds are high. The M3 bounces around in a similar manor but the nose always stays true to where you want it and holds its line.

This car really has got under my skin and oddly for such a modest power output it just never feels under powered. Its just the right amount for the car. (and so it will remain – until I’m flat out and someone pulls away from me wink )

Watch out for Astra GSI's... wink

Seriously though, I agree with you 100%

What I wouldn't do for a nice standard de-spoliered Evo right now.
