Hi all,

Throughly enjoyed my maiden trip last year for my 30th. Will be re doing it all again next year with Speedchills again hopefully.

My question is my and my Dad would like to hire a car from the Thursday before until the Monday after. Driving a max of 850 miles from home to Le Mans and back. As the others are hiring a camper van next year it gives us the chance to have a nice little 2 seater, as our tents will be in the camper. I would love any kind of TVR, Lotus, Ferrari, etc right through to an old E Type or similar classic motor.

Where could we track a company that would be ok with us taking a motor to Le Mans?

Please understand we want to do this for the love of the cars and the event NOT to drive it into the wall showing off to some birds outside the Co op

I hate to say this but I think you'll be lucky to get something like this, there aren't to many places you can rent cars like this without it costing a fortune, without you have to join on of those clubs or without having to whack down a massive deposit.

Fair point, shame really but maybe in the years to come I can afford something far nicer than a Seat diesel!

Several moons ago on a previous trip to Le Mans our team of four was supposed to be travelling down in a Forester however several bottles of red wine and a night on Autotrader found us looking at a £2k Bentley on the morning we were supposed to leave. We had ever intention of buying (£500 each) running it down there and then selling again on the Monday but unfortuantely when we turned up there was no interior in the damm thing!

Rather than renting, how about buying something like a TVR Chimaera then selling it when you get back.

You could get one for under £6k, whack a thousand miles on it at lm, give it a wash and sell it on, I bet you'll more or less get what you paid for it.

Or an S Series or something....

Obviously you have the hassle of buying and selling, but it does mean you'll have a fun car for potentially not a lot of cash..

Buy something just for the trip.

Assuming it makes it down and back you should be able to re-sell it, making a small loss at worst and you might even make a small profit.

Depending what budget you can scrape together how about:

BMW 540i (V8) - £1,750 (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1306568.htm)
BMW 750i (V12) - £2,995 (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1298532.htm)
BMW 840 (V8) - £4,995 (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1257437.htm)
Fiat Coupe (20v turbo) - £1,500 (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1322778.htm)
Ford Probe (2.5l V6) - £395 (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1311940.htm)
Honda Prelude (2.2l) - £800 (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1253566.htm)
Jaguar XJR (4l supercharged 6) - £2,495 (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1297855.htm)

If you are just buying it for Le Mans then fuel economy, servicing and insurance aren't really an issue as you will be dropping it when you get back (unless you like it a little too much).

Most fast car hire companies only include about 100 miles/day then somthing ridiculous like £4 mile thereafter so be mindful of that when doing your research.

Good find though. May be useful for a weekend in Cornwall one year
