Hi all,

I've just found out that my car (E34 525i Sport) is in need of a new ECU. I have been quoted £120 + VAT by the garage for a second hand replacement from a brakers yard. This price doesn't include fitting.

Is this a reasonable price to pay? Or should I shop around myself to get a better deal?

I'd post up a wanted ad on the bmw5 forums, you'll get change from half of that and they're very easy to fit yourself. Unless it's a later car with EWS, in which case then theres some jiggery pokery to do to allign the ECU to the EWS, so you will need someone to fit it for you. No EWS=easy peasy.

Find out what ecu it is, there will be a bosch number on the top, 0261 200 402 for example.

depending on what one, it'll be a direct swap, or if it is EWS enabled, you can open your original ECU, remove the chip and place that into the new matching ecu and it'll work fine.

I've bought ecus like this for less than a fiver, but i wouldn't pay more than £25 for one

Thirded - an ECU from that era will be a straight swap and a 325i ECU from the same model year should also work.

Found one for my manual 535 in a breakers in Birmingham for £17. Just slots in. Try typing the part number into an e bay search.
