Sump Gasket

What is peoples preference for the sump? Use a gasket, some silicone or both ?

I always used rtv silicon, making sure both mating faces are clean and degreased first.

It seems difficult to get good quality sump gaskets these days. The original LR cream Hylosil seems to work best of the sealants I've tried.

4 studs to assist mating the sump is a big help, unless you are assembling upside down on an engine stand. Its far too easy to wreck any gasket or sealant during assembly when trying to get the sump up to the block from underneath

Which ever sealant you end up using remember to use it sparingly.

There have been several reports on PH of people finding surplus sealant clogging up the gauze on the oil pick pipe in the sump

yes i`m here . don`t ever mention that word silicone, it cost me a new engine ! knackered cam,broken rings and a dry engine .

what do you mean ? i saw the engine with the sump removed .a 1" ridge on the inside, the bottom of the sump with broken down silicone .the pick up was also blocked .

Out of interest, how many tubes do you think would be required to seal a sump pan???

I thought maybe 1 tube each side, but I'm happy to be guided by the expert in this area
