Cat owners, can I ask you a few questions
Discussion
I hope this thread doesn't turn bad, I'm not attacking cat owners, I simply have some unanswered questions I hope you can help me with.
- Why is it seen as acceptable to have a domestic pet roam free to do as it pleases, for example it's not acceptable for dogs to roam free. You do realise that they jump on car roofs, defecate in gardens, terrorise other pets (rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs).
- This will not apply to all cat owners, but the cat owners in my neighbourhood seem to put their cats out to pasture almost 24hrs per day, where does the enjoyment of having a pet come from never seeing it?
Help me understand, because as a dog owner I'm embarrassed if my dog cocks his leg for a pee on a neighbours tree, yet their cat likes nothing better than having a kip on the roof of my car, clawing at one of the other neighbours rabbit hutch, or burying its own s
t in my flower beds (great fun getting a handful when you're weeding).
Over to you cat owners.

We have a cat...it's 13 years old so hopefully will be dead soon.
It came from a rescue centre, in a box...twas my wife's idea so don't blame me.
Bloody thing...it eats only the expensive variety of cat food. It's always the wrong side of the door. It wakes me up meowing....but at least it doesn't s
t in my garden, so it's not all bad.

Your misunderstanding starts with describing a cat as a domestic pet. It isn't. It is a wild animal that chooses to live in a particular house for some part of the time. If it finds a better house it will move in there. Cats don't have owners, they have staff.yellowbentines said:

It is not a nice thing to do to stop a cat from going outside, they are outdoor creatures. Therefore many people that have a cat living with them do not impose restrictions on when the cat comes and goes. You have to accept a cat on its terms, not on yours. This is completely different from a dog, which is almost always pleased to see you, wanting attention etc. A cat might want attention, but it might also tell you to bugger off if it doesn't, or simply leave. The independence is part of the appeal.
As for where they take a dump, you have to accept it is impossible to meaningfully train a cat, they do as they please. My ex had one she had "trained" not to climb on worksurfaces and windowsills. What this meant was it mostly didn't go on worksurfaces and windowsills when she was in its line of sight. All other times were considered OK though
.The law and pets is funny one
A Dog is a beast of burden - you own it.
A cat isn't. Strictkly speaking it isn't owned by anyone. Hence its right to roam. cats - They tolerate you (that is if you have one).
This is why you your beast of burden is bound to you - hence you have to tug your sh!tmachine around on a piece of rope or leather.
Are you a dog lover that revels in your Dog licking its ar$e & balls and then licking your face

...and i can't believe all those wild birds that roam free.
They should be caged. Immediately.
I knew there would be some idiot with a useless reply, congratulations, you win the t-shirt.They should be caged. Immediately.
You're comparing wild birds with pet cats, animals that people choose to own, people that surely realise that with having a pet comes responsibility.
We have dogs in the family, I'm responsible enough to keep them restrained when they're straining on their leads to get after the neighbours cat and tear him a new one, should I bother or just let nature take it's course?

You started a thread with the what appears to be the unstated intention of stirring things up with regards to cat ownership and you are surprised? Bless

Cats are now the UK's most owned pet, I can't really see that changing, so frankly, get used to it and stop whining.
