I've just bought my first VAG car (Mkiv R32) as a runaround and I really like it. It also means that this part of the forums is new to me.

At the risk of getting slaughtered, it FEELS LIKE there's a large proportion of threads in here about stuff going wrong.

Is it just me?

I agree but balanced with the almost complete absence of any threads asking positives. There are decent VAG based forums that I expect most people go to.

Why is this not a decent VAG based forum?

I say this to people every single day who have 'read ******** on those internet forums' - simply that people don't post online to tell the general public that nothing is wrong with their car and they quite enjoy it!

The internet is as ever populated in the most part by neysayers and the harbingers of doom and brimstone who would have you beleive the world is shortly to end.

A correctly maintained R32 if treated with respect shouldn't give you any real headaches smile

People just dont post when things are going well. People post when somthings up and want an idea of what it is. So as a result a lot of the post are about things going wrong.

Then you have customer perception to deal with. VAG has a repritation for well built reliable cars "if only everything was as reliable as a VW"

So if customer x has a problem with his car, he is already 50% more pissed off that that has happen than if exactly the same fault occured on say a Ford or a Vauxhall, where he might expect the odd bit of trouble. Somthing which always gets me, is customers say to me, well why has it broken its an Audi, like the 4 rings make it indistructable or somthing.

That customer perception of quality (which generally is totally justified) means when things do go wrong, people are more vocal about it. Check out the TT and A5 owners forums, there very vocal about the tiniest issues. In the workshop we refur to the TT forum as the Mis-information supper high way.

Just because there is a lot of noise doesnt mean tha cars are rubbish, I used to work for jaguar for 7 years, the reliabilty of Jaguar and Audi who I work for now and have been with for 4 years, are very similar indeed, yet Jag always come near the top on those JD Power serveys and Audi always come near the bottom. Its all down to customer perception.

I didn't mean that. Go to RS246 for RS4, go to Audi-Sport.net for A/S3 for example, many more posts than on here asking questions about the cars. They have a following not replicated here, doesn't mean to say that this is a poor forum.

The people who tend to come on forums are people who are interested in their car. Forums are possible the best place to get info about such a car, maintenance, performance what ever.I see your point about other forjms are more busy but they are specific forums for such cars, audi-sport for example is all about Audi's, obs lol. But there are loads of threads about how to do, or this has gone. No one rarely starts a thread saying I really like my car because everyone else is likely to be in the same boat. As said already if the car is maintained right it shouldn't give you unexpected hassle.

Watch the news next time its on and you'll notice most of it is bad, its just the way we are.

When things go well its not news worthy so not many people talk about it. i am guilty of this, when people ask about my a3 i usually point out the leaky radiator and the exhaust valve not working, ignoring the fact it has a big boot, comfy seats and the stereo sounds really good, they dont care!

I would also say that having the expert minds of Dr G and Tame Technichian available on this forum must bring a few more questions to the fore.
