Electrical Connections Help Needed!!!

Having received my S3 part restored the previous owner had kindly cut off all of the electrical connectors and not labelled the wiring, what a nice chap!!! I have managed to bell out most of the wiring with help from Steve Heath's wiring diagrams. There are a few wires however which are puzzling me.

1st Starter Motor - Thick red wire from starter to Batt, no probs here. Red and white small wire to starter solenoid I guess no probs here.My question is with the diagrams, on the 290s supplement diagram there seems to be two other wires black and red, black and yellow, these wires dont seem to be present in my loom.Can some one please explain why?

More questions for you guys later, thought I'd better let you chew on them one at a time.

Only big red main feed and red/white switching wire on my starter.


Maybe that bit only relavent to 2.8 engined cars ? ?

Just the red and white/red on mine also. The diagrams I have are the same as the ones on tvrsseries.com and they show only those two on the supplement sheet for the 2.9.

The extra wires are there on my S1 but aren't connected to anything.

Question 2

Does the alternator have to be earthed to the chassis or does the earth find its way to the chassis through the engine? If it has to be earthed to the chassis which terminal do I use? Bearing in mind all my alternator brackets have been coated in nice shiny powder coat.

Question 3

The indicator warning panel has a light called M.I.L. I'm guessing this stands for Main Ignition Light is this right?

I believe it stands for Malfunction Indicator Lamp (ie. it's a check engine light)

Had wondered myself what it meant (never seen it light up), now we know ! Ignition light is top row right

Alternator would normally be earthed quite happily through the mounting bolts, main bracket powder coated as standard = bad earth but adjusting bracket normally zinc plated = good earth
If in doubt I would either scrape off a some coating () or make up a little earth lead from one of the mounting bolts to somewhere handy on the engine block or even directly to the chassis.

From what i can gather there are three wires running to the alternator, 2 x brown wires on one terminal to batt and main fuse bar and one small wire running to ignition light on the other. There is another terminal on the alternator below these two, could this be the earth terminal?
