disco td5 temp gauge problem

Can anyone help me my disco td5 temperture gauge seems to be playing up intermittantly the temp drops to zero and the red warning light comes on this does not happen all the time but it is starting to get more regular the coolent is not over heating. Has anyone else had this problem? could it be the thermostat or the temp sender sensor any ideas would be much appreciated
