Indeed, the only surprising thing is that he said it.

An amazing break out of the truth. I wonder if he'll soon be sacked... Anyway, maybe even he thinks the "climate change" bullsh11t is becoming unsupportable and that they may as well give up relying on it as the tax raising excuse.

Well, the surprise there is not that it's all about taxation, but that we have a politician who, at least for one minute, was honest.

Some other individuals are saying different things.

Exaggerated and inaccurate claims about the threat from global warming risk undermining efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and contain climate change, senior scientists have told The Times

Environmental lobbyists, politicians, researchers and journalists who distort climate science to support an agenda erode public understanding and play into the hands of sceptics, according to experts including a former government chief scientist.

Excessive statements about the decline of Arctic sea ice, severe weather events and the probability of extreme warming in the next century detract from the credibility of robust findings about climate change, they said.

Such claims can easily be rebutted by critics of global warming science to cast doubt on the whole field. They also confuse the public about what has been established as fact, and what is conjecture……

Sir David King 2009:

“When people overstate happenings that aren’t necessarily climate change-related, or set up as almost certainties things that are difficult to establish scientifically, it distracts from the science we do understand. The danger is they can be accused of scaremongering. Also, we can all become described as kind of left-wing greens.”

Compare and contrast. Sir David King 2004:

Antarctica is likely to be the world’s only habitable continent by the end of this century if global warming remains unchecked, the government’s chief scientist, Professor Sir David King said last week. He said the Earth was entering the ‘first hot period’ for 60 million years when there was no ice on the plane and “the rest of the globe could not sustain human life”.
The Independent on Sunday, 2 May 2004

Compare and contrast. Sir David King 2008:

“If all the ice on Greenland were to melt, sea level would rise by seven metres. Is that likely to happen? Well I was saying six years ago unlikely [but] I’m afraid that that’s having to be revised… 80 percent of our human population lives within less than a one metre rise of sea level so imagine the destabilisation of our geopolitical system with a sea level rise of the order of one or two metres. And that is on the cards I’m afraid.”
Sir David King, London, 19 June 2008

Because we can't be arsed to do anything about it

Even our very own true believers will find their comments coming back to haunt them eventually.
They will never change. Haven't you seen Ludo trying to argue on his threads- taking the scientific moral highground-making his 'science' jump through hoops to get his point across.

Most of the climate believers either ARE liberals or acts like them- when faced with constructive substantiated arguments- will simply put their fingers in their ears and then sing 'la la la la la la'.

I've seen this with all the Obamma-mammas over here also.

That's NOT actually what he said in the article, did anyone read it? The article says he failed to say it was to prevent climate change, not that he DID say it wasn't to prevent climate change. Typical fkin Daily Wail....headline bears no resemblence to the content of article!

that ok, but do you really trust these politicians who twist words so that later on, they can say "I never actually said that" or if they need to "I told you already". Truth is, they never actually tell you anything.

I agree, but much as I loathe AD and the CC lobby, it's not right to make up a headline and state he said it when he clearly didn't.

If a tax hike is to pay for bank bailouts, is such a move justified by (bogus) environmental scaremongering?

The rationale for the hike was stated. Yes, a dozen or more alternatives were not explicitly excluded, but it's stretching things beyond credibility to say that any of them might have been the real reason rather than the one given by Darling.
