Hello guys,

Need some advice if possible, I have sent off all the forms for the cycle scheme with evans, its a fairly large company and they are set in their way in terms of the Evans scheme, so no planet-x bikes, or Boardmans for me

I went to my local today, and they had a few things, a BMC that had a huge discount on it, and full 105 kit, looked ok, but having not heard muchabout the brand, was unsure..

They also had a Raleigh with carbon rear and fork, but the bloke said most people don't want to ride a Raleigh lol..

What do people think is the best bike at £1000 from the Evans range at the moment?

I am thinking Cannondale caad9 09 discounted one for 999. Although the biggest they have it in is 56, and I am 6 foot..

Easily the best bike available for that money, bar none (and I include Boardman in that statement).

That frame is better than many carbon frames and will take more punishment. Get a fitting on it - your leg/torso/arm dimensions might mean it fits you. If it means you'd need a 120mm stem, that's no big deal.

The new Merckx bikes are also very good, with the aluminium framed one (with carbon rear triangle) being £999 - targeted at CTW schemes. Not sure if Evans will stock them though.

I'd check that the CAAD is included as I think C2W schemes go on the RRP not the sale price...

BMC are well-known and Evans have only just started stocking them. As a result they grabbed a load of old bikes to knock out at a good discount. I wouldn't discount them too soon.

Alternatively, Halfords can get ANY bike for you, so Evans might be able to do the same. The £1000 Boardmans are supposed to be awesome.

Not true, its about the price you pay. My Specialized was £1300 reduced to £999, which was what I paid.

Most shops will also allow you to pay over £1k, with you just paying the difference to the shop. Potential ownership problems with this though at the end of the 12 months.
I'm still going to this though to get the bike I want.

I would probably go for the caad 9, at that price its a steal and probably has the best frame in the price range. dont settle for anything less than 105 though
the following are also worth a look if the caad9 sizing doesnt suit you.
Raleigh: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/raleigh/avanti... which is supposed to have a more upright feel and thus may be comfier if you are not planning to race or use for serious fitness.
Felt: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/felt/f75-2009-...

I wouldn't bother even looking at anything other than the BMC. It's a great bike and one hell of a bargain - £450 discount! BMC is a serious high-end manufacturer.

Thanks guys..

The bmc has the same spec as the caad9 though? So where did the extra £450 come from in the first place?

The quality and weight of the frame. The CAAD9 frame was used on top-end Cannondales just a few years ago so it's very good, but the BMC one is triple butted so should be lighter. My brother's friend has a carbon BMC and the detailing is stunning - they compete with the likes of Colnago etc.

The CAAD9 has a downgraded chainset too, and wouldn't look nearly as good on the road wink

I think the Cannondale, BMC, Felt and Raleigh are all excellent really.

I'd add the Scott Speedster S30 - if the 56 fits you (at 6ft with semi compact geometry CtoC size would usually be around 56-59cm):
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/scott/speedste...

Very good frame, wheels, same forks as the CR1 range and Ultegra equipment(bar 105 cassette & chain).

Bloody hell, that looks nice doesn't it..

Good spec too!

Problem is my local don't have any of these bikes and I can't make them get all of them in...

also can someone tell me what this compact bit means? Is it just double or triple chain ring?

This is now turning into a very hard decision, I like the Cannondale, the BMC was nice, although frame looked a bit odd..And that scott looks great!!

A compact has two rings, and the gearing is typically nearer a triple than a double. Essentially, they save weight over a triple for most of the range a triple has, though a small ring doesn't really weigh that much! I ride a compact on my road bike and it means that you'll climb pretty much anything, but I do find when I really fly that I'm almost out of gears. A compromise i'm happy with.

In the context of frame geometry 'compact' refers to a frame with a backward sloping top tube as opposed to the traditional horizontal top tube.

The frame size is normally measured centre of bottom bracket to centre of where the top tube intersects the seat tube so you may find that a 'large' may equate to a 59cm in traditional geometry but a 55 cm in compact or 57 in semi compact - You could try another bike in the same range with the same geometry to check the size.

I'd have thought Evans could get the Scott from another branch if that is what you like - it is a very nice looking bike (as is the Raleigh in my opinion).

No, it's something below that, but it's no deal-breaker. They're very nice bikes all round

the 2010 caad9 for £1K has tiagra, i think people are getting confused with 09 and 10 models. to be honest, there isnt much difference between the two bar a bit of weight. my new tt bike will have mostly 105 mechanical components....

I won't be buying the 2010 model, I am talking about the 09 model. for £99 from £1150.
