PH H&S Experts: Bonfire Location matters...
Discussion
Hi folks
Firstly, apologies for the awful picture, i did not want to get wet nor am i an expert with photoshop. I'm having a bonfire next Saturday and want some advice about where i put the bonfire. The bonfire will be in the oil drum you can see in the picture, the board nailed to the steaks will be in the yellow "firework" area to mount the catherine wheel on.
The three green area's represent slots for the 2 gazebo's we have. The tarp to the right has all the wodd under it, so can be moved wherever.
So, mark in red where you would stick the bonfire, there will be a couple of toddlers present, so i'll be fashining a barrier wherever it goes. My initial thoughts were to put the gazebo's on the two slots nearest the house, and then put the bonfire to the right, as that makes building a barrier easier, but is that too close to the fence?

Need some idea of scale!
However most good fireworks these days require people to be 25 metres from the firework! Therefore I would move the fireworks right down to the far end of the garden. Or at least half way into the second grassed area. Is that a shed or greenhouse at the end of the garden? If it is watertight etc you could secure the unfired fireworks and possibly the person who is going to be letting them off in there. In my experience home firework parties work better if the person firing the fireworks is seperate from everyone else.
I'd place the Gazebos on the Patio and the then the fire on the lawn to the left, probably beyond the end of the patio. That way you just erect a chicken wire fence straight acorss the garden from fence to fence.

Fair point about the shed, good idea to store myself and fireworks in there, it's pretty solid and water-tight! The fireworks will be towards the top of the garden, i put the boxes where they were to illustrate the start of the "safe zone" for the fireworks. Hadn't thought about doing a chicken wire fence right accross the gardxen, good idea. However most good fireworks these days require people to be 25 metres from the firework! It's hard to give a scale, but the right-hand side of the grass area, running along the fence is about 7 or 8 feet. With the left hand side border i'd say about 22', IYKWIM

I'd also put the fireworks as far down the garden as possible, I think you're much too close with them where they are.
Is your oil drum bonfire going to trash your grass? If so it either needs to stay on the patio or you need to get some other slabs or similar to sit it on unless you're planning to reseed the grass!
I'd put the fireworks at the bottom, the bonfire on slabs halfway up with as Chris suggests a chicken wire fence across the whole garden to keep the kids out.
Gazebos by preference on the patio to avoid people standing on wet grass as long as you can secure them properly on the hard surface?

Gazebo's are no problem to secure, had them there many-a-time. As for the drum on the grass, it's currently standing on two breeze blocks and i'll be putting sand in the bottom of the drum to keep it sturdy and to stop a lot of heat soak.Is your oil drum bonfire going to trash your grass? From the point of view of watching the fireworks, if I was doing that I wouldn't want the bonfire to be in my vision when watching them, and would put the oil drum this side of the blue line in the picture above, and then fence off the concrete area.
People can then stare at the bonfire, and your eyes don't get distracted when watching the fireworks, kids are still safe

Not 3 feet from the fence, like our idiot neighbour:

It's our fence - this happened 6 weeks after I spent the best part of a week painting it. 2 months on and still waiting for him to replace it - not holding my breath though as he has moved out while his bungalow is demolished and replaced with a 5 bed house...
