The rear brake drums on my daily driver are stuck fast (97 2.0 Mondeo). I've tried hammers and heat and it's still stuck on.

The next step is a brake drum puller but nobody in the UK (according to Google) seems to sell them (are they called something else?). There appears to be a wide range of universal pullers available although I'm not sure many of these have the reach or the ability to get a good hold on the drum.

Anybody got any suggestions on where to get one or do I just go to the garage and get them to do it?

I haven't ever seen a dedicated drum puller, and a search through Frosts brake tools shows lots of wierd tools for dismantling drum brakes but no puller. I think you're left trying to lever the thing off. In the past when I've had trouble it was caused by the shoes jamming on the edge of a groove worn in the drum. By winding the adjuster right off, then turning the hub while pulling outwards on the drum, it eventually came off.

Frequent cause of sticking is grooves worn in the drum into which the shoes have expanded.
Is the drum moving at all? If its stuck fast to the hub you could try some Freeze'n'release to deal with the rust holding it on to the wheel studs.
It sometimes works if you slacken the bleed nipple on a wheel cylinder which will allow the cylinder pistons to retract. Either let the fluid dribble out or fit a plastic tube & put the other end into a container. Putting a plastic sheet under the reservoir cap will stop the fluid just running out.
Bleed after replacing to be safe.
Is this link of any help? http://www.fordmon.ru/show-145.html

I have used this on Pug 306's when the drums won't come off even when the shoes are fully retracted but their drums have the bearings pressed into them & the whole thing has to come off anyway. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...
You could consider removing the drum complete with hub.

Thanks for the advice guys. The drum is stuck fast which leaves me to believe it's rust holding the drum to the hub rather than the brake shoes being stuck in a groove (although let me know if this assumption is wrong). The bleed nipple is also rusted solid so I can't let any fluid out to see if that will help the situation.

Think I will leave it for now (the brakes have stopped squeaking), see if I can find any freeze spray and have a look at pullers next time I’m in a tool shop.

If the shoes are definitely out of the way (they can intrude by a couple of mm!) try tapping it on first.

percussion maintenance tongue out works - if it doesnt move then use a bigger hammer - at worst you will have to renew everything laugh but if it is that rusty then it may not be a bad thing

What you need to search for is a "Hub Puller" which attaches to the original wheel bolt holes in the drum with a centre bolt that winds against the centre of the hub. First makin sure you have removed the hub nut. is an example of one, or search for something like Sealey Universal Hub Puller 1/2?Sq Drive Code: AK713 or just put hub puller in as search for different types. Hope this helps, all be it a bit late might help in future.

That will only work if the drum is integral with the hub. As far as I know Mondeo drums are separate from the hub.
