Well, I got a sneaky peak of the topic because you updated the Wiki before creating the threads.

She can't remember who the woman in green is. It's her daughter. She can't remember why the baby has the same name as her. It's her great granddaughter. She can't remember why she's living in a big house with lots of other old people who can't remember why they can't remember anything.

Memory is a great thing. Enjoy it while you can. Dementia, on the other hand...

Miniman, Excellent shot and sentiment, it will be hard to cap that.

Having been through the same thing with my mother it is a very emotive image you have posted.

One from the American Cemetery at Henri-Chappelle in Belgium, taken a few months ago when some of the families of the soldiers buried there were over to pay their respects.

From talking to some of the people there they said that they had been brought over by the US government as they had more than 1 member of the family buried there, in this case there are two brothers crosses shown with the 2 American flags in front of them...quite a sobering experience visiting the mass grave sites.

As I walked around I found 3 graves next to each other which were for 3 brothers who died 1 year after each other, 1942/1943/1944...a massive loss for their family at home...

The original text I put together with the image on Flickr:-

Yesterday myself and an American colleague in town for a few weeks from California paid a visit to the Henri Chappelle American Cemetery which is located near the small village of Hombourg in Belgium.

The cemetery is home to 7,992 American soldiers graves as well as the columns of the main building showing each of the 52 states crests and listing a further 450 names of soldiers from each of those states who were listed as "missing".

On any day the cemetery can be quite an eerie and emotional place, but with last week seeing the D-day commemorations take place there has been a large number of Americans in the area to pay respects to the remains of their relatives who reside in this Belgian field.

We spent around 90mins at the cemetery yesterday just walking around and taking it all in - with only a few other people coming and going during the same time.

One thing we noticed was that where two or more graves lay side by side with the remains of two family members (brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers) each cross had an American flag posted in front of it - pretty emotive if you ask me, hopefully the image above will convey this feeling to anyone viewing it also.

These particular two crosses mark the graves of Carl & George Capobianco, brothers from Pennsylvania. George died on October 13th 1944 and Carl's life was taken on November 29th 1944 barely a month later than his brother.

On the rear wall at the cemetery reads - "In honored memory of those who gave their lives for their country"

A couple of memories, can't decide between them...

The little boy in there is now a big, strapping (married) 25 year old.

I'd only just got back from Safari (perfect location for the topic frown ) and hadn't had time to process any pics (not that any of mine were as good as Dogsey's though...).

This pic I took earlier this year back at my mother's place where I grew up reminds me of my childhood. She makes fantastic dougnuts, a bit crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. I love it when still warm, sprinkled with vanilla sugar and then I dip it into home-made strawberry jam. nom nom nom

The other two pics reminds me of my father who passed away seven years ago. His carpentry tools have been resting on the shelf in his old workshop and been unused ever since.

IMHO (although I'm not the judge) that would probably have more merit - a photo that has memories only for you is great...only for you!

yes

If the image stands on it's own as a representation of Memory with no need for explaination then it does indeed have more merit.

Wow.

I love the way the words CONSUMED, DOMINATE, ERASED, MORE THAN HALF OF EUROPE seem to stand out to promote what a simple yet powerful stark reminder of a sad past.
