Are we all as comfortable as Alonso that Ferrari know what they are doing? They didnt have the skill to turn there car around this year so can they do it for 2010?

Fernando Alonso says moving to the Ferrari team is the safest option for any driver, despite the Italian squad's disappointing 2009 season.

The Maranello squad, last year's constructors' champions, finished in fourth place this year after scoring just one victory.

Ferrari stopped the development of this year's car early in order to focus on 2010, when Alonso will join the Italian squad from Renault.

Despite Ferrari's poor season, however, Alonso remains confident the team will challenge for the titles again next season.

"You have to try to be optimistic by nature," Alonso told Cadena Ser radio. "I think what makes me calm is that going to Ferrari is a synonym of quietness, because you know they are giving their best.

"It's a team and a marque born for competition and so you know they are going to give it all for their car, and you know that Ferrari is usually among the first.

"Sometimes they win titles, sometimes they don't, but they never have a year that's too bad. I think going to Ferrari is the safest option for any driver.

"Out of the 20-22 drivers no one knows what things will be like next year, it's all again a big question mark and we'll see how the new cars perform.

"But I think being at Ferrari, or McLaren, or in good teams, gives you more peace of mind than at any other team because anything can happen."

The Spaniard, who also endured a difficult season in 2009, believes he and Felipe Massa will form a strong partnership next year.

"All I heard from the team is that he is completely recovered and that he will be my team-mate. I think together we can have a very strong team," the Spaniard added.

"Massa has shown he is a very fast driver, that he has grown up a lot in the two or three years and I think we can challenge the strongest teams like McLaren or Red Bull."

WTF? I have just posted Alonso's quote as he has been asked if he is worried about Ferrari being able to turn it around in 2010? Whats the problem exactly? Fisi's performances either show he is on par with Badoer or that car is a joke? If Mclaren and Redbull could keep improving there car then why couldnt Ferrari?

They have the biggest budget in F1 so where is the problem exactly?

Yes, they did but why? Because they didnt have the skill and expertise to turn it around? Its not financial reasons surely? I am sure there sponsors from Abu Dhabi with the all singing all dancing "Ferrari World" complex were pleased with there pathetic showing all weekend. Monte did not seem too pleased either during Qualifying - they actually seem on par with Torra Rossa?

As far as we all know, there is not too much of a change next year in terms of aero and Redbull and Mclaren seem to be the leading teams.

The ferrari team desperately lacks strong leadership right now. Ross Brawn should be running the team, not "yes mr montzerella sir" stefano. but montzerella wanted a yes man he can bully, unfortunantly yes men don't get things done. He can hire all the best drivers he wants but it don't change st. schu/massa, raik/massa were both strong driver lineups that could and did win, I don't see alonso bringing anything to the team they didn't already have.

Actually ferraris problem with montzerella reminds me of the fundamental honda/toyota issues, too much direction from glory hunting politcal tts that don't know better than to write cheques then leave the team be.

The first highlighted line is what my thoughts are - i thought that was obvious? As for Alonso, he was asked on the official website as there are rumours like it or not that Ferrari are struggling with next years car.

"No, not at all," he told the official website when asked if he was worried inability to fight back from their early season woes.

"Both started at the back during this season. I think McLaren started even worst, and now they have possibly the best car on the grid.

"Here they have been very dominant throughout the weekend, and also in Brazil, where they only had problems during qualifying with the too wet conditions. In the end Hamilton finished on the podium in Brazil.

"McLaren have pushed with some new developments for this year during the season, and Ferrari did not.

There are many reasons for Ferrari stopping the development of their car mid season, I’d suggest the following maybe at the top of their list

  • Car wasn’t competitive and Brawn showed what that a longer gestation period is beneficial
  • Title hopes were behind Massa and not kimi, as they already knew that it would be kimi’s last season why would they want to spend millions on winning the title only to have the number 1 on another teams car and the driver doing PR for somebody else
  • The Kers equipped car was a technical dead end, why waste money

The one thing I very very much doubt is that it was due to a lack of expertise within GS

just to add a bit of balance here is the link that the OP copied and pasted most of his post from http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79973

That would hold some water if there was as big a change in regulations but theres not so there wont be any team having such a "double diffuser-like advantage" like Brawns did this year.

As there was no testing allowed, surely Mclaren and Redbull are gathering so much valuable data from the last few races thatcan only help with there 2010 car? Maybe Ferrari are going to design a completely new car with new Aero but what happens if its a dog as this years car was - all i am saying is that i think the 2010 cars will be an evolution of the 2009 cars and Mclaren and Redbull are heading the right way.

This developing next year's car so giving up on this year's seems a bit odd to me. They've got four months off. Isn't that time enough? I know the cars will be somewhat different as the fuel's got to last, but it is not a fundamental change, not like Mosley used to impose every six months. So why give up?

But I'm with the original poster's suggestion: if they couldn't crack it with Raik and Massa what makes 2010 so different.

Ferrari seem to be reverting to their norm of the pre Todt/Brawn/Schumacher/others days. Is Alonso the man for the job? They certainly need someone to make demands rather than excuses. But the relationship between Mass and Alonso might be the telling thing.

If things don't improve and fairly early on, then someone at the top will have to move aside. To be replaced, no doubt, by a yes man.

Is,

"Are we all as comfortable as Alonso that Ferrari know what they are doing? They didnt have the skill to turn there car around this year so can they do it for 2010?"

part of Alonso's quote? Is this a question he was asked?.... in which case maybe you want to reference it so we all know who said what, or is this the question you are asking??
The first highlighted line is what my thoughts are - i thought that was obvious? .....................
It was obvious, which is why, 'skill' has been made big in the original quote,

and my reply was,

"Another class fact from Mr. 996."
I see - I said Ferrari dont have the Skills and you have complemented me on my class fact? beer

Seems Button also finds it strange:-

"They've had a different approach over the last few races. If you look at Ferrari, they've said that they've had no development which is unusual to hear that, as there's not much that changes for next season.

"But it seems that McLaren have thrown everything at the car and have been very competitive over the last couple of races.

"So going into next year, yeah, they're going to be quicker compared to the start of this season but I don't think they're suddenly going to be stronger than Red Bull and Brawn.

This developing next year's car so giving up on this year's seems a bit odd to me.
I don't know - I don't think Ferrari care too much whether they're third or fourth in the constructor's*, and I doubt if the additional win money would make a massive difference to their finances. So once it was obvious they weren't in with a shout of winning outright, why waste time / effort / money trying to be 'best of the midfield'?

I know the regulations aren't massively different for next year, but surely spending eight months developing a car with a big fuel tank and no kers has got the potential to give better results than doing the same job in four months?

* of course they'd prefer to be third, but not to the extent that it's worth compromising the chance of being first next year

Planet F1's summary of Ferrari - couldnt agree more.

With six drivers on hand, Piero Lardi Ferrari in attendance, along with Luca Montezemolo, Naomi Campbell, Jay K from Jamiroquai and the megalopolis that is Ferrari World next door, it was frankly a bit embarrassing to finish 12th and 16th in the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Raikkonen was unable to get ahead of Kobayashi on the opening lap and given KK's performance in Brazil that wasn't really such a surprise. It has been one of the Scuderia's worst seasons in years, the first time they have failed to get a pole position since 1993 and is very likely to be the only season where they've qualified last for three races.
