Watched it on Sky box office on Saturday.

Was pretty good actually, Crowe in better-than-normal form but Affleck was as dull as usual...

Haven't seen the BBC drama it was apparently based on, is it any good?

If you haven't seen the BBC drama, get it. You can pick it up on DVD pretty cheaply and it is truly superb. The film is not only a pale imitation, it is not even worthy of the comparison.

The BBC drama is brilliant, great actors and snappy pace, the film however bored me to tears.

I confess to not being in the slightest bit objective as I love the TV series.

Is the tv show a similar story?

The story is essentially the same but it was severely condensed and simplified for the Hollywood audience. i.e. Huge amounts of what you work out for yourself in the TV series are spoon-fed to you in the film and major plot revelations come right at the start instead of being revealed slowly.
