Re:Mercedes 500 SL (107 series) Manual Gearbox conversion?

We are thinking of building a MB 500SL(107 series)Road rally car. The 107 is the square set car produced in huge numbers, from around '73-'89. We'd like to fit a manual box on place of the auto.

Also the 5 litre, 1981 model qualifys for Historuic Rallying - well subject to a MSA waiver.

Has anyone or does anybody know anybody who's attempted this?

The MB might sound an odd choice for a rally car, but they are strong, cheap (relatively) and come with a unstressed V8 producing 240bhp. The SL was in fact a works Homolgated rally car in 1981 and today a manual version, with revised exhaust system and suspension could make an interesting alternative that will be easy to develope.

You could try the likes of Castlemaine Rod Shop or Dellow, to see if they list any bellousings for a conversion.

OR Conversioncomponents in New Zealand.

Or of course, some other manuals may just bolt on from a different Merc model ?

I bought a bellhousing kit from him several years ago for my RV8/Supra R-154 setup.

Luckily for me, exchange rates were much better back then !!! But he does sell good stuff, and was very helpful at every stage.
