Missing the point

Colleague of mine was told at his appraisal that he really needs to improve his social/interpersonal skills if he wants to get on.

He's just told me he wasn't sure how to go about it so spent last night at home googling 'interpersonal skills'.

We have a few of them at our place. Over educated and under socialised goons who have spent far too much time in education/textbooks and think they know everything while the reality is that their total lack of social and personal skills goes very much against them when it comes to putting things into practice and indeed dealing with customers/colleagues.

While I appreciate the ironic/funny side to this story, I dispute the underlying assumption that self-taught, textbook or indeed online-based learning is intrinsically inferior to empirical or socialised learning even for "interpersonal skills".

It's not uncommon to see a reverse snobbery in this country that elevates those who've come through the schools of "life" or "hard knocks" above those who have been academically trained, which like many things is a remnant of the class system as well the widespread sentiment that disparages those with high educational achievements, or who spend lots of time reading books or in front of computers, as "swots" or "nerds" and socially inept. That truly is missing the point.
