And some great comments at the bottom.

I'd be quite happy if the law let us do things like that here. Good bet that she doesn't get charged with anything.

Unless she was being threatened, do we think that this was maybe a bit over the top?
Obviously it depends on _exactly_ what happend, but my take on it is that she was in the house, heard a noise outside, went out with a shotgun and wasted a car theif. My car is my P&J but killing somone over it just seems OTT.
I don't want to hug hoodies either, and I think we should be harder on criminals, but this is disproportionate.

Nope.I wonder, if this happened 2 or 3 times a night for a few months, would the number of attempetd car thefts fall? Or would the robbers take guns as well as screwdrivers with them?
Bearing in mind that the rule in Texas seems to be that if you kill somebody while in the process of committing another crime then you get the chair?

I'd imagine there'd be no car thieves left.Lefty Two Drams said:

I'd imagine there'd be no car thieves left. But at the lower end of reasonable estimates, you're asking what would have happened after 90 days' worth of at least 2 people getting blasted by a shotgun per evening.
Which is a lot of dead car thieves.
At those sorts of odds, seems reasonable to me that the remaining ones might look around for a slightly less risky occupation.
The rest might take a gun with them to steal cars, but they will have a pistol which they have to draw and aim at those stupidest of car owners who were to hail them before opening fire.
The car owner has a shotgun that needs to be pointed in the general direction of the scrote, and the element of surprise.
I'd fancy my chances of keeping my car in that scenario.

I'm sure there are all sorts of prudent reasons why this is wrong, but I can't help but think you should surrender your human rights when you f*ck with other people's property. The thief may not have "got what he deserved", as it were, but he took the risk and it didn't pay off.
Absolutely. We're just having a discussion in the office about the sheriff (in Alabama we think it was) who was asked why he and his men had shot a cop-killer (who they had been chasing for days) 64 times when they caught him.
He replied "Because we ran out of ammunition Ma'am.
I am a big fan of American justice.
One of the guys in the office is from Houston (it was him who sent me the link in the OP) and he once saw somebody breaking into his car. He opened the front door to his house and the guy ran off. He called the police who promised a car would be round sometime. Couple of hours later, the cop arrives and my mate asks him if there was anything he could have done.
Cop replies: "If you're protecting your property, you can do more than I can."
I think that's great.
Apparently, if a car thief is caught carrying a gun then that is two individual felonies which are sentenced as such. (And both will count towards his 3 strikes).
And a murder while in the process of another felony is an almost guaranteed death sentence.

Well if he hadn't been f
king over the lady's car, he wouldn't have had his arse shot off.
This is what I wanted to say actually, you've just done it a lot better

- Threatening with a weapon - Agreed, it's ok to shoot them then.
- F**king with a car - You think it's ok, I don't.
- What about criminal damage?
- What about grafitti?
- What about tresspassing?
- What about shoplifting?
- What about littering?
What crimes do you think are justified in being immediatly shot? Are there any crimes you don't think an instant shooting is suitable for?

What I would like is zero tolerance for any crime.
And while in this case, shooting the criminal may well have been over the top, the fact remains that if he hadn't of been committing the crime, he wouldn't have ended up dead.
Actions and consequences.
Any crime? Really?!And while in this case, shooting the criminal may well have been over the top, the fact remains that if he hadn't of been committing the crime, he wouldn't have ended up dead.
Actions and consequences.
Be careful what you wish for.
