Afternoon,

Well the spectre taht been haunting me has finally jumped from behind and hit me with redundancy. I volunteered so can appeal, but am in two minds about whether I should.

Just looking for a heads up of what its like out there at the moment. I am a degree qualified engineer with 6yrs experience in manufacturing and design engineering.

An exciting Eng. job would be great but I'd be happy CAD draughting etc. Have got plans for the severance pay so would rather not fritter it on bills etc. so I'd even be happy stacking shelves if it covered my outgoings and I didn't have to think too much!

I'm working on my CV so happy to send it to any recruitment types out there.

Cheers for looking,
Shirt [Ace Engineer Extroardinaire!]

The engineering marketplace is at the moment totally shot. I have a small machine shop, and i have known nothing like it in 23 years,we have seen a decline in work since November 2008. Good luck, the general feeling is that next year will see a slight uplift.

cheers, and so was i this morning i can tell you! feeling much better now the severance has improved and a chat with the boss has given me some confidence that i can pretty much name my leaving date. i've wanted out for ages so this may be an opportunity.

in the meantime i can trim my outgoings sufficienly for even a bar/shop job to cover the mortgage, and if anyone nees their supercar given a run out now and then my rates are more than reasonablesmile

bad luck fella, hope something turns up. May help saying where abouts in Yorkshire you are and more specifics as to your expertise? You never know who might read the thread

Whats your CAD package?

I found there were loads of potential jobs advertised but I didnt really fit in any of them. Mainly as I havent used CAD in anger since I graduated in 2002.

Have ended up working in Bootle for a Lifejacket design/manufacturer.

Useful sites I found were jobstoday (essentially jobsite but somehow I preferred it) and CV Library. You may even try thecareerengineer.

Trouble with saying you will do CAD draughting is there is a massive amounts of draughtsman and technicians out of work. That is there primary role.
Mechanical and electrical seems a little more buoyant than some other disciplines.

Whereabouts are you? We 'might' be hiring on but I'm not certain as I'm at home just now rather than at work. It's oilfield work but we typically hire degree qualified folks (engineering and geology). If a change takes your fancy PM me a few details and I'll ask when I go back to work next week.

Evening chaps,

I am based in Hull. Willing to travel throughout Yorks/Lincs for the right role but currently limited to those locations as I am renovating and will lose all the time and money I have invested in the house if I panic sell.

I have a 4yr Masters with Honours in Aerospace Engineering, but due to the time I graduated have ended up in the Steel Industry [Primary Manufacturing] and have accumulated experience in Production, Ops Management, and latterly on the design side.

I use Solidworks and MicroStation at work with occasional AutoCAD, but find I can adapt to most packages in a few hours. I also use a lot of FEA software for analysis. Most things I design are rotational assemblies, cooling and lubrication systems etc. but can be called on to come up with anything the production guys ask for. Being heavy industry, I also get involved with health & safety, CDM regs etc. and self manage my projects [inc. financials].

I have been looking to break into OG work with a view to relocating internationally and making a career out of it, but I expect these roles to be scarce at the moment. I thought draughting would be a well paying stopgap whilst I finish the house and regroup. I have already registered with one agency [been a busy day!] and intend to cover the others and have CV's targeted for manufacturing and engineering roles by Monday.

Anyway, its been a long day and has just ended with me locking my car and house keys under the bonnet and a 2,5hr wait for the RAC to rescue them, so bedtime for me I think.

Speed8 - Will PM you in a sec. Thanks for the heads up.

Thats always bad to hear.

I finished University last year (Summer 08). Luckily I was employed p/t in retail and managed to carry this on full time while I was job hunting, so I never faced being unemployed.

It took me till this September to get a job as a Design Engineer. To me, at the time it seemed like there were an awful lot more jobs calling for people with your level of experience, than those looking for 'juniors' and graduates.

I think with 'downturn' companies who previously might have 'invested' in a couple of youngsters, (which may not be value for money for a few years till there all trained up), jsut wanted to get someone in who could do the job straight away.

So I dont think you should be in too bad a position.

I am still subscribed to a lot of the email lists for engineering jobs in the area - I will have a sift through and send the names over if you like.

if you could that'd be great, cheers!

i am looking at a couple of OG graduate schemes. i've been mentoring undergraduate engineering students for the past couple of years so i am going to feel a little rich competing for jobs with them, but i think i will need to if i want to break into OG. i think i'll have the problem that i've been in industry too long though, i should be chartered soon and i'm unsure how this will sit with grad. recruiters.

things are better this morning. parents gave me some sound advice and the revised figure is what i expected when i put in for VR 5-6mths back. i'm looking at it as an opportunity.

Sorry to hear that, but at least you got severance pay, many haven't.

I'll drop a line back at where I used to work, but I know they were getting rid of people earlier in the year. Scun-thorpe if you're prepared to travel there.

My OH's Dad works at 'the place beginning with C' aswell, I know hes been worried about it recently.

I applied for their Grad scheme last year, for botuh Shorpe and Rotherham ,they were really good and then all of a sudden communication stopped and I think they either pulled it or vastly downsized it.

I'm considering recruiting an additional 'Technical Sales Person' selling small educational CAD/CAM/CNC equipment and software into schools around the country (driving licence required).

It’s not a ‘traditional’ sales role. It’s selling into schools so it’s less pressured. It will suit someone with some sort of Engineering or CAD/CAM qualification who has a background in either engineering / manufacturing. It would also suit a Design & Technology Teacher who wants away from the day to day routine of Teaching.

We offer competitive rates of pay, commission, a company vehicle, with a friendly & successful company based in Brighouse.

For more information visit:

www.denford.co.uk

www.f1inschools.co.uk

PM me with your CV if you’re interested.

Cheers. BB.

Nothing received although PM seems a bit messed up sometimes.
