Portable radio what one?

Discovered last year that a portable radio is pretty much essential at Le Mans for knowing what's going on, on track!

I bought one of the cheapo 'on ear' Radio Le Mans ones at the circuit last time. It wasn't really loud enough tho.

What do you lot use?

We have a stereo for the camp site as it's a little more social than all sitting around with earphones in.

For track-site we've all picked up small radios and (generally ear-bud) headphones over the years - these are much cheaper at the supermarkets than track-side.

Sony walkman with decent headphones:

The headphones are the important bit, comfortable to wear for a couple of hours and I can get ear defenders over mine to cut out the annoying french git on the commentary in Tribune 19.

I would suggest one with a digital display, lots of mobiles have this.
When you lose the signal the cheapo dial tuning models are difficult to re-tune with all the background noise. I have a couple bought in French supermarket for less than £5 each.

I use the radio on my Nokia mobile phone - works every well

I use what is now quite an old Aiwa pocket AM/FM radio (model number CR-A21). It runs all weekend etc on 2 AA batteries. Some say that older non DAB radio is better than FM.

I use the radio with Sony closed full sized headphones (model no. MDR-V300)...great combination. I do think the 'phones really are important to get the best sound. One minor problem is the 'phones can make life a bit hot if the weather is warm...tough, huh!

Thanks for the replies. Have had a look around and have decided to go for this .

It's not got a digital screen but looks reasonably powerful/sturdy.

For the campsite, our really old Roberts Radio sits nicely with our classic cars!

I see where you're coming from bud! To be honest, I did think it was expensive but they pop up on eBay every now & then for £22 which is a but closer to what I want to pay!

Was going to use it with my little pair of B&O earphones so not worried about what they come with.

Any radio will do, but it's the earphones that count. You could go with the full on over-ear cans, but these have some disadvantages, e.g.

They're massive and bulky
They're often expensive
They eat batteries because the speakers in them are much bigger
They make you look like a berk

The best option IMO is to get a pair of in-ear sound isolating headphones, such as the Sennheiser CX300 or the similar (and much cheaper) creative EP630 'phones - here for less than £4:

I was using some headphones like these stood next to the big screen near the grandstands last year (so about 10 feet from the track) and I could still hear the commentary as the Corvettes went past! They really work well.

As for anyone who spends £30 on a radio and then says they're just going to use any old earphones they've got kicking about... Well, that's a bit like people who spend hundreds on alloy wheels and wrap them in LingLong ditchfinders... You're not spending your money wisely.
