I'm not a betting man but my gutt feeling is that not many will agree with you.

I own a B7 RS4 Saloon & before than an E60 M5. I've driven the E92 but personally i DO prefer the RS4 as it's performance in my mind is usable 99% of the time, but in the E92 M3 as per in the M5, fun is limited by weather conditions.

Both fantastic cars though.

Both absolutely fantastic cars, and when I need four seats I'm going to get one of them. Or a Merc C63 AMG. Or possibly a Lexus IS-F.

I'm just delighted that you can still purchase compact V8 sports saloons.

Post exactly the same question on the Audi forum. Put all the answers into a hat, and pick one out at random ..... that answer is as close to FACT as any other wink

Bit of an add first post. Similar to posts you get in the Porsche forum ie - Audi R8, better than a 911?

Never driven both and I would like to own them but personally I would choose the M3, pref a saloon.

driven both, bought an e92, various factors, I prefer RWD, didn't like the stories of suspension probs on Rs4, both are great cars, neither will disappoint. plus I'm a sucker for carbon fibre and my red one was cheap as chips last November.

Driven both - loved RS4 more following initial test drive. Decided on E92 M3 as it required learning - therefore a better long-term ownership proposition for me - Couldn't face having problems with DRC (some people have had utter horror stories). Audi do guarantee the suspension for 5 years to be fair but the inconvenience of leaving it with the dealer every few months (or whatever) just put me right off!

As has been said though they are both great cars!

I have been lucky enough to drive the RS4, the E92 M3, and the C63 AMG. And the M3 wins hands down.
The noise of the Merc got me looking, but the total package of the M3 sold it to me.
Very Very fast round the track (many people don't realise it has an identical time as the R8 round the Ring too)

You can't really adjust the angle of attack with the throttle in the RS4 which means it's less of a drivers car than the M3. For me it's about the involvement and the 4wd of the dowdy, sorry I mean Audi, removes a huge area of fun from the drive.

Having a proper drivers car with 4wd is IMO like having a bike that can't pull wheelies. wink Just look at the Gallardo Balboni.

Still think the RS4 has an anodyne helm, not as bad as its forebears or siblings but just doesn't give you the fun that can be had through minute adjustments of the BMW wheel. That said the engine almost makes up for everything.

Defo a matter of opinion. A drivers car that can only be exploited in better good weather conditions hardly makes for the perfect drivers car. I'd agree the M3 does have edge when it comes to involvement, but that involvement loses it's fun in the wet (unless tail out shannanigans are your bag).

In the Summer my M5 was the most fun i could have with my clothes on, but as soon as Autumn arrived the fun quickly vanished & for that reason alone to me makes the RS4 the perfect all-rounder in this country. NOT the best at everything & if we had a Dubai like climate the table would be turned.

I disagree.

I drove the Dowdy (hehe) RS4 yesterday for the first time and found it strangely uninvolving. Given the positive magazine reviews, I was quite surprised by this, but even with the Sport button pressed and the DSC off, the thing refused to do anything other than grip or understeer. It wasn't even that fast either; an M3 would murder it in a straight line.

Moreover, with tyre technology what it is today, you'd have to be going at an indecent speed to pull away from a similarly driven M3 in the wet. Given the draconian attitude towards spirited driving nowadays, surely this is more relevant. At least with the M3, you can have some low speed fun with the DSC off.

Just ask Housey about the RS4's supposed 400bhp+ power output.

The M3 can still be exploited and is still involving in the wet though. It doesn't lose that, it just means that you can't stomp on the throttle with the disregard that you can in the dry. You have to take a more considered approach, perhaps making it more involving still! The Audi in the same conditions is still going to be at the bane of it's built in understeer, it just happens sooner than in the dry.

As said, i guess it's a matter of opinion as the Motoring Press, Mfctr stats & real world give a very different outcome.

I do agree the M3 could be a tad more fun & totally get the 4WD vs RWD debate, however & i stand by this having owned a tuned M5 then the B7 RS4, the RS4 is the stronger all rounder (i.e. it can remain at the upper limits of it's performance in virtually any conditions).

Fully aware some RS4's have been down on power (mine isn't one of them) & although the stats have them side by side in performance i'd agree a well launched M3 would gain a small advantage in a straight line, but where i live i'm not blessed with alot of straight roads & being Northern the weather is not my best friend eithersmile

These 2 cars have their own individual attractions but i'd argue what is "a better drivers car"? I'm a driver & i prefer the RS4 for my purposes etc. It don't make it the better car but better for me.

Not sure how you've been suffering understeer as that's not a trait my car has & apart from a DMS Map, Milltek Zorst & slightly wider than stock tyres, the mechanicals are stock.
