E39 530i stalling when cold - any ideas?

I've just become the proud owner of a 2001 Y reg 530i. It has a problem, which the seller informed me about, which is that when cold it won't idle but the revs just drop and it stalls. It's an auto so it's a bit tricky to keep it alive with the throttle. Once it's properly warmed up it's fine and will idle no problem.

Can anyone offer any ideas as to what the problem might be?
