Does anyone on here have any knowledge of what type of steel would be best suited to making engine/gearbox mounts?

Im looking at using mechanical grade CDS tube to make some gearbox mounts but was just wondering if there is any problems with this material in this application where there is a lot of vibration ect. although not as strong would normal mild steel be better?

Any mild steel of 3mm~6mm + width .. then again it depends on the design settled on.

Either steel grade will do the job but will mean nothing if it is not thick enough.
The design of the mount and choice of material section is more important.

I understand that design & material section is most important, i was just trying to find out if there is any issues in using CDS such as brittle weld joints ect?
Most mounts are made from plain old mild steel & mech grade CDS is not far from this spec so sould be ok.

Cheers

I always use plain old mild steel in 3 to 4 mm thickness, either MIG or TIG welded but usually MIG. Never had problems with cracks yet. Think carefully about the direction of the forces. The one most commonly not accounted for is the engine and boxes tendency to want to carry on forward when the braking under it's own momentum.
