So this morning i decided i was a little bit bored of my life here, so i booked a one way ticket to Egypt, in the hope i can find some work. Parents say i was a little hasty in doing this, i have no where to stay i have no job lined up just a bit of money and diving qualifications and experience working in a busy bar.

So... am I mad, brave, ambitious or something completely different. I am little bit nervous with a hint of excitement. So hopefully all goes well. I have 3 weeks until i leave.

Go for it, whats the worst that can happen? it doesn't go to plan and you come home, dust yourself off and try something else..

Eygypt is fking crazy

Terrible wages, dire living unless you are going to be in a 5 star hotel and more begging than you can believe

Have a great time.

You would have been better off sacking it off to somewhere who at least spoke the lingo.

Good luck and I wish you all the best anyway - I just wouldnt have chosen there.

Sounds pretty awsome if you ask me! I wish you all the best and hope something good happens!

You have to keep us informed though.

As has been said, the worst thing that can happen is that you head home after a few weeks. Get out there and make the most of it, you only live once after all.

Good man!

Its this sort of 'see what happens' attitude that gets people far. The same people who do this sort of thing are generally the sort of people who are pretty good at getting by and dealing with stuff on the fly as it comes up.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I can't imagine a job will pay much in Egypt.

Thanks guys.

If I didn't do it now, i don't think i ever would.

Life is not about money, i would rather look back when i'm older and have some interesting memories than a 9-5 job. Good memories are priceless. When i want to earn money i will be going Offshore.

Am very envious! But go for it, you only live once. I would just advise cramming as much research in about Egypt and general travel before you go to be better equippped.

Listen cocksprocket (cheers for that one ND), I'm all for upping sticks and getting the fk out of dodge, I took a 6 month sabbatical round the world myself a few years ago.

However, given that the locals will work for 2 shekkels a week and sleep under a bench I'm merely stating that perhaps, Egypt is not the destination of choice to go on a whim looking for some work.

Especially if you're a whitey.

Unemployment is on the rise in Egypt with some 2.3m out of work. The economy is not growing and there's a serious housing shortage.... Hornet's right in suggesting that a dab of realism might be handy before heading off there - along with a return ticket. smile

I'd try the big hotels - Hilton, Sheraton for example and see if you can land something as a waiter maybe?

Good luck.

Well, then go for it. Just make sure that you have enough cash/credit on the card to be able to come home if you need/want to.

He said he has diving qualifications.

I'm sure a lot of diving companies would like a qualified British diver to take groups of European / British tourists. Then find some bar work for the evening shift (again, I'm sure many bar owners would like a European working behind the bar)

Chances are that most opportunities will be in the tourism sector working on the front line interacting with the Western tourists. Very doable I would say.

Yeah, i'm fortunate enough to come from a wealthy family which is a plus point. Not that i'm banking on that, its my choice and i'll do wahtever i can to get by on my own, not really into the silver spoon culture.

Job wise I am going for scuba diving, Currently have a proffesional Scuba diving status, I have a few contacts out there so should be ok i guess. Like i said i have experience working in a bar, can get a reference (whether its worth anything or not). Apparently i'm attractive and have a shinning personality. So we'll see, i amv ery excited tho if not a little bit nervous and its still three weeks away yet!

Good man... go for it!

I went to Australia at 10 days notice many years ago... I did have an open-ended return just in case, but otherwise the same as you - a little cash, a few skills that I thought I may be able to use, knew no-one there when I arrived, but survived 6 months until they kicked me out (well, wouldn't let me renew my visa). I would still be there now if I had been able to stay...

Only an hour away I wouldn't even worry too much about getting home.... I ran out of cash completely in Spain once and hitched a lift back (well ended up driving a blonde to Geneva - in her Porsche!)
