Pruning apple trees

Anyone here a knowledgeable pruner?!

I've got a (probably) 40 year old apple tree that's been a bit unloved - it's grown leggy and there was no fruit this year.

We don't want to lose it as it's an attractive tree in an otherwise featureless area of lawn.

When's the time to prune and how hard can you cut back?

Any serious advice appreciated...
