2.0 Tdi Intermittent Hesitation
Discussion
The wifes 2L Tdi A4 (2005) has developed an intermittent hesitation between 1600 - 2000rpm. It only seems to happen in 2nd and 3rd gears and when accelerating using light throttle openings (say when in stop start traffic). When the hesitation happens you can hear what sounds like the recirculation valve on the turbo venting boost (almost like a chuffing sound).
It doesn't do it above 2000rpm and pulls cleanly if you accelerate harder. Does it sound like a throttle or turbo problem.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Interesting.
Not heard of that before,
But if you can hear venting boost (there is no recirc valve on the TDI), then its probably got a boost leak.
Have a look at the intercooler and boost pipes. But if it was that you would hear it on full throtle acceleration too, although you wouldnt get the hesition on full throtle, but would expect quite a bit of black exhaust smoke.

Thanks, I'll have a look and check the turbo / intercooler hoses. Didn't realise that they don't have a recirc valve on the turbo as sometimes when changing gear you can hear what sounds like boost being vented into the intake.
The hesitation is perhaps better described as a stutter, just as if you were quickly "tapping" the accelerator peddle.
