How much of a modification do you need to tell your insurance about?

I have changed the last tail section on my car, ie changed the last muffler, It does not alter the power of the car just the noise :-) just wondered when I tell them how I should word it

i think the way you worded this would be ok .. with flux i did not have topay anymore for coilovers ..but did with exurst , because it did increase power

Tell them about everything, and see what they say. My insurance didn't go up when I told Adrian Flux about the headers and everything that goes with it; they just made a note of it. If it goes up a lot you can always cancel your policy. It's worth declaring things though because if you make a claim and they find something non standard it can affect your payout.

I will give insurer a call in morn, how shall I word it? cos I am sure a muffler change does not increase power, But I bet they will just class it as a full sports exhaust mod frown

Tell the that you needed a new exhaust, so fitted an xxxxx as it was cheaper thatn an original from Vauxhall. If they ask about any power increase, you can tell them. smile

I would not even bother, I've had a custom made cat back fitted and can't be arsed talking to the insurance company to try to explain to someone who dosen't really understand what I have had done. All it really means is that if your car was ever stolen and recovered and one of the parts they nicked was your exhaust, they would only replace it with the standard one the car was sold with, most ins companys are only interested in mods that have a real effect on performance from the standard spec anything else is just a chance to get more cash out of you. Things like super chargers / wheels / brakes that cost some money would only be in your interest to disclose to the insurer, only a very confident insurance company would not pay out on a claim due to non disclosed mod like an changed exhaust. Bottom line, unless it's a huge power mod or a big expenses to you, don't bother, anyway, most ins co's have a cap for what they would pay for mods fitted if the case ever arises !! (fingers crossed it won't)

Risky, if car is modified and its not disclosed then it gives the insurer the perfect excuse not to pay out after an accident.

Just called the insurers told them I was changing the rear muffler section, they asked if it made the engine more powerful, I said no, because I really dont think it does, they said that it would just be classed as as a maintenance mod and will make no difference on the policy rolleyes

Think I would rather have paid just some sort of fee just for piece of mind.

Grey area, a change of exhaust is immaterial, the fitment of a louder stainless steel sports exhaust is generally classed as a mod

just had power pack on r8 called admiral charged another £35, not too bad at least if we have an accident (touch wood we don't) then they cannot invalidate the insurance which correct me if I am wrong is what happens or used to.
