OH is preparing her CV and it goes roughly:

Career goals
Education
Experience
Additional skills
Memberships
Interests
References

This is her first proper job after the masters baring volunteer work with NGOs and work experience So its not the usual one I deal with which has years of experience and leaving the education off.

I have suggested switching the education (2 degrees and a masters) and Experience round (8 different companies worked for) as thats what the employers would rather see.

Is this still the norm?

Also her experts at her university careers have said don't put any grades on as they will be discussed at the interview. My gut feeling is WTF, the first cutting stage used to be based on grades/experience and then it was interview. I'm not sure that any employer that would take a look and not see any grades and do nothing more than bin it.... Her experts have told her that this is the norm now and should be endured to???

I would bin a CV that told me they had 2 Degrees and a masters, but no grades and not invite them into to find their grades out, now would the managerial staff out there do the same?

I'm trying to help her out but the people she paid £10 and 3 hours of her life take the precedence rather than people who actually have a real job.

Help?

Hi - I read about 200 cvs a week - if there are no grades I assume its because they are 2:2 or even lower.

Education before Jobs please.

Oh and keep it to a page for a Grad style CV, anything else is a bit silly.

I assume the other way round only due to why would I be interviewing for a senior analyst/architect of a system and want to know their education from 8+ years ago... it just makes them look lazy.

Cheers for your input so far

is education still relevant if you have over 15 years senior experience at blue chip companies?

I only look at a handful of CVsw every week, but education first, listing the most recent education first. Then work experience. "Career Goals" are only important in CVs for top level executive roles imo.

Really? Oh pissy, I've put work experience first. But my grades aren't very good. I don't want to put someone off. I want them to read "Hey this guys done some pretty impressive stuff, shame about his grades, but might as well talk to him" as opposed to "Engineering degree, good. less than a 2:2, bad, throw in the bin."

But in fairness, academic attainment is an important aspect of assessment of suitability in my line of work, (like many others).

For someone wanting to be a blood sucker I expect education on there, but only for a maximum of 5-8 years then it really should be experience in the industry first?

Unless you are being elitist and only picking red brick people...

Now my experience and knowledge speaks for itself and the fact I got a desmond at a drinkers uni doesnt matter... They never look at that now!!

Yes, but it should be included after your career history as it becomes less relevant (in most cases) the further into working life you get.

If you're a fresh faced grad then your grades should be at the top.

Your CV is pretty good Ricc.

yeah I'm quite proud of it but whilst it impresses the agents keeping the door open with employers when it isn't exactly the combination of lion taming, secret agent, F1 driving and sub-atomic engineering that they want is proving to be wearing

saying that something's just popped up in the last 10 mins which could scupper my holiday in Oz irked

Cause people now are wanting red brick rather than old polys... even though my old poly bh slapped the red brick next door with the qualifications the people where getting and the number!!

Or at least they did when I was there... pretty poor now!!

Still suprised employers put education before experience.
I bet it's more of a "We can pay this graduate way less than this guy with 15 years experience"...
